Sir Charles Gavan Duffy has wiitten an open letter, three columns long, to the Earl of Carnarvon, the lord lieu tenant of Ireland. The letter is one of congratulation to the viceroy for his adoption of an admirable and upright policy toward the Queen's subjects in Ireland. Sir Gayan Daffy submits to the lord lieutenant that if the Marquis of Salisbury. Cabinet undertake to re store Ireland's control of herjown local interests and to accord her the same kind of independence as that enjoyed by the British colonies, not a single Irish member Jn the next Parliament will refuse to support the programme of his Government. Th' Lauderdale peerage case has been decided by the Hou?o of Lords in favr of Maj r MaitLand. There were two claimants to the peerage Major Maitland and Sir James M ait land. Maj r Maitland contended that he was the heir of the fourth son of the sixth Earl of Lauderda'e. who married Mary MacA !am in New York in 1772, two days before his death. Mary Mac Adam had borne three sons to this fourth son ot the sixth Earl, and th3 petitioner held that this marriage legitimatized ' the off spring. Sir James Maitland, a descen dant of the fifth son of the sixth Earl of Lauderdale, contested the claim of Major Maitland. In the hearing before the House ol Lords United States Min ister Phelps, Senator Edmunds and Messrs Fowler. Stephen Nash and Clarence Cary gave testimony concern ing the law of marriage as it existed in the American colonies in 1773. - Mr. E. S. Cramp, ot the Philadelphia ship-building firm of William Cramp & Sons, is reported in the New York Eoemnq Post as expressing himself as follows concerning Mr. John Roach's business embarrassments : "I do not think that the condition ot the ship building trade in general warranted the assignment, nor do I think It would have been made had: it not b6en for . . -v. - other reasons known only o Mr. Roach and his confidential friends. To be sure, the trade is not in the flourishing condition it was some years ago, but I do not think it is depressed any more than other manufacturing interests. t he iron trade, wnich is closely asso ciated with it, has been in a bad way for a long time. and. of course, that is in a measure reflected in the business of shipbuilding. Most concerns, how ever, when hard times, such as these, strike them are able to tide oyer the season of depression, having made money when trade was good. The Roach concern was always considered oie of the richest in the country, and for thatreason we are as much puzzled as any one to understand how the. present condition of affairs came about.1' .Mrs. Parnell hss written to Miss Ellen Ford, sister oi Austin Ford, of the Irish World, in relation to her finan cial embarrassments, . in which she stid : - "1 have striven to sell and to pay to such an extent that at least I ' have nothing left of which I can easily dis pose nor if I could do so would I prob ably realize now enough to live on from such sales. Owing to some pay ments having stopped last year, I don't see how I am abje to live, for I have no income for myself to the amount of one cent." Mrs. Parnell, in the letter from which the above is an extract. asks Miss Ford if she can suggest means whereby she may obtain enough for the relief of absolute necessities Mrs. Parnell says: ' I have not spar ed myself in the discharge of my duty at any time, and would do enough by working in some way now, but that at length I am obliged to acknowlege that I cannot work continuously.' It was, well known that. Mrs. Parnell was financially . embar rassed, but no one supposed she was in such straitened circumstances at her letter represents. A movement has been commenced already to raise a lund for the unfortunate lady. n ii . Now is the season lor painting your houses. Go to Jacobi's Hardware Depot and buy your paints. One of his requests was that he should be allowed to sit up and not die in bfd. He leaves two sisters Mrs. Cramer and Mrs. Corbin who live; in Jersey City. His last public speech was at Ocean Grove a year aco before the Christian Commission. II leave three pons and nnfi daugh ter Fred.. U. S... Jesfie and Nellie, all married and eight grandchildren. His mother was an enthusiastic Meth odist, and believed in personal holiness and the nearness of the stcond coming. Amontr the portraits in George W. Ctiilds effice is one of (Jen. Grant and the Emperor of China, taken seated to getherlind arm in arm. For several years he owned a house in Philadeiphia, but he never occupied it. It was Iot with all the rest ot its effects, in the financial crash. Until given over to the government. all the souvenirs of hi3 European trip were at the office of George VV. Childs, to whose custody he confided them. The hnsband ot Nellie Grant Sarto- ris. bis daughter, is an Englishman, an only son, and a nephew of Fanny Kem- blo, the actress, who became Mrs. Pierre Bu'ler. of Philadelphia. When a boy, if he ever went beyond a place, be never retraced his footsteps. but look a roundabout tour to reach the destination some other way. He often said he attributed his success to a reso lution taken in youth, to never turn back" in any undertaking. Gen. Grant smoked his last cigar on tho 20th of November. 1884. In a let ter to a friend mentioning the circum stance, he said he had smoked many thousands of cigars, and they had been his greatest comfort through the last years of the war on the battlefield. It is a curious coincidence that the fathers-in-law of Gen. Grant's sons al suffered financial reverses, like himself. Fred Grant married a daughter of Mr. Honore, of Chicagd. once a millionaire. Buck Grant married a daughter of Sen ator Chaffee, of Colorado, who lost heavily. Jesse Grant married a dangh ter of Mr. Chapman , a former Calilor nia Crcesus.
