Tho Grant Family.
Mount McGitEoon. July 25. P1&e
are not alfosether vague, although far
Irt.m settled, in regard to the future oi
the family. They will be left, in e ui.
parativcly good-circumstances, so that
i hey could afford lo release the mort
gage ;n their house in Sixty-sixth
strut, and make it their home. But ii
they lie in New York city, which" is
doubtful, iht re i3 new no expectation ol
their rccupym that house. It could
never be as it was to Ihem, endearing
as wruld - be its associations ou the
General's account. They were clad to
get away from, it as he was. The sen-e
of comfort and security departed with
the removal of their treasures, in May.
t the custody of the Government. It
was not the lo?s or tceir things thai
pained ahem, but ihe means by which
they went. The General always in
tended to give to the Government these
things the pictures. bronzes and
other rare and beautiful gifts that had
bert presented to him but he was
denied that satisfaction, and when he
wrote to Washington signifying his
purpose, a reply came, back that the
silt had already been promised by Air.
V anderbilr, who claimed to own them.
The General was too much dispirited
to contest the claim, lie thought he
had already assigned to Mr. Vander-
bilt enough property to make good that
unfortunate loan of S150.000, but he
was in no position to resist Mr. Van-
dcrbiitV opinion to the contrary, and
: i l I , c : ..: . . 1.
iuo uueusui'u piuu ui giving iu uiui
liovernment nis treasures were aispeii-
ed, and Mr. Yaoderbilt became the
actual donor. It was a hard . struggle
for the General and the family to part
with themv under such circumstances,
and when they were gone, tho bare
walls and vacant places at his house in
Sixty-sixth street were constant re
minders to all the family of their mis-
lortunes.
The hcuse was a gift to fie General.
At the timo of its purchase lucre was a
mortgage upon it of $40,000. As the
mortgage could not then be released the
amount ol it was handed to Mrs. Grant,
who deposited it with Grant & Ward,
intending to withdraw it when tho
mortgage became due. It was swal
lowed up in the crash. The needs of the
family increased the trust, which
amounts now, with interest, to about
$52,000 The price paid for the house
was ft 100,000. Gen.Grant's example led
his relatives to invest their possessions
with Grant & Ward, and when disaster
cam (5 it swept away not only all he had
and Mrs. Grant's investment, but the
possessions of his three sons and the
saviDgs of four other families connected
by blood with himscit or Mrs. urant.
lie felt responsibility for the support
and welfare of all 'these dependencies
resting upon him after the failure, and
lor all of them he sought to make pro
vision from what the book might yield.
His income lor more than a year, as
had been the case, indeed, in years
gone by. was consumed1 as fast as it
came in, in providing for others.
The publishers estimate the Generala
share of the proceeds of tho book at
75,000. The General assigned all his
right, title and interest in this moriey
to Mrs. Grant, iu whoso name the . con
tract stands. No qualification is at
tached to this gilt,- and she may usethe
money as may suit herself. A"s she
knows what tiie tJeneral has done and
what he would have continued to do.
she will doubtless follow out his plan
of benefaction, so that none of the
lamily or relatives will want because
of losses sustained in following his cx-v
ample. Jt i3 her present intention" to
retire somewhere to a quiet, jiodest
homo. She Will try to sell, with the
least delay, tho house in Sixty-sixth
street and the Long.. Branch cottage.
Just where she will permanently live or
how must be left to future discussion.
Col. Grant will own the General's
library, private records, and other
papers, many of which are of great
value shehas developed literary
talent, while assisting the General on
the book, he ha3 been advised to avail
himself of hd dpportunities afforded by
these documentary possessions. Among
them are papers from which much of
interest can be written bearing on the
General'sexpcriences from 1865 to 1863,
a? well as during bis Presidency and.
since. Wheu Gen. Badeau's Military
Life ot Gen. Grant" was published, the
General sent handsomely bound copies
to the rulers of foreign countries from
whom he had received courtesies when
abroad. Among the papers left by the
General are autograph acknowledge
ments of the receipt ot the book. There
are enough olber interesting . and. com
plimenlary letters to make a volume iu
themselves. ? j M!
