have more suspension bridges than
any nation on the globe. Their engi
neeis are putting up suspension bridzes

structures approximates to the size of

are styh bridges in France that it is
impossible to secure an accurate list ot
them on this side of the water.
From the -records ol observations
made at thirteen Prussian stations
since 1873. Professor Muttrich has
determined that forests exercise a posi
tive influence on the temperature ot the
air; tliat they lessen the daily vari
ations of temperature, and 'more in
summer than in winter, and that the
tempering effect of lhe leafy forest; is
in summer greater thanthat of the pine
forest, while in winter the pine forest
has more influence than the disfoliaged
forest.
One house recently uncovered at
Pompeii appeared lo have been un
dergoing repair at lhe time it was over
taken by the terrible volcano storm of
November 23rd, A. P. 7i. Painteis
pots and brushes, and workmen's tools,
were scattered around. and spots of
whitewash starred wall and floor. Pots
and kettles has been bundled up in a
corner by themselves, but dinnor had
not been forgotten. A solitary pot
stood on the stove. The oven was ril
led with loaves of bread, and a suckling
pig was awaiting on a brown dish its
turn to be baked. Hut the pig never
entered the oven, and the bread remain
ed in it eighteen centuries. Monsieur
Florelli's museum at Pompeii contains
the loaves twenty-one n number
rather hard and black, but ' perfectly
preserved:
