Storm at Laurinbiirgr.
There was a very heavy storm of
thunder, lightning and rain at. Laurin
bure last night, although we have heard
oi no serious accident or damage as yet.
A passenger in the sleeper of the Caro
lina Central train was severely shocked
by the lightning and a brakeman who
had his hand on the brake of one ot the
cars was rendered helpless for awhilo
by the Fame electric discharge.
"Wires Down.
The storm ot yesterday afternoon
appears to have been much more severe
in the surrounding country than it was
in the city. . The wires and posts of the
signal service in the vicinity of Scott's
Hill were blown down, so that ho
communication from that direction can
be received at the office here. Meu
were sent out thi3 morning to repair the
injury, which, we believe. i3 not very
extensive.
The New Postal Card.
The new. postal cards will before
long be issued to thepostoflice.probably
by the first of September. Instead of
the ugly design now in use there will
be a bead of Jeff er sou in an oval, with
a symbolical wreath partly surround
ing it. tied with a band, upon which
appear the words. "One cent." The
printing is to be done with brown ink.
The design may provoke some criticism
as being a trifle heavy, but it is said to
be an improvement on the old one.

Watch Them,
The door bell of one ot the citizens
was rung this morning, when one of bis
young daughters went to see what was
wanted, hhe found a little barefooted,
ragged colored boy, who asked for
something to eat. The little girl left
the boy standing at the door and went
and told her mother what was wanted.
She returned to the door in a mcment
and found the boy tip toe'ng his way
towards the mantel piece in tho parlor,
but when discovered immediately ran
out of the house and mado tracks for
some other locality. Nothing was
missed, but the little scamp was un
doubtedly working for some ol the
mantel piece ornaments when he was
interrupted by tho return of the little
girl.

Iu Memoriam.
At the meeting of the Board of Alder

suitable resolutions in regard to the

following are tho resolutions;
1st. The Mayor and Board of Al
dermen of the city ol Wilmington have
heard with profound regret of the death
of General U. S. Grant after his pro
tracted and patient sufferings.
2nd. Without referring particularly
to the endowments which justly made
him famous throughout the world, and
to his many excellent personal quali
ties, we desire to put on record our last
ing recollection of the magnanimity and
forbearance which characterized bis
treatment of the South at the close of
the late war. and to commend especial
ly his noble utterances in the closing
moments of his life, towards healing
the wounds of that unhappy event, an-i
reuniting tho people of the whole coun
try in the bonds of fraternal love.
3rd. It is with great pleasure that
we find our feelings prompting us so
spontaneously to extend to his bereav
ed family and to our brethren at the
North a sincere sympathy at their and
the country's loss.
4th. That a copy of these resolutions
be sent his family and be spread upon
