Last night was a scorcher. We have heard several say that it was the hottes night ot the season, and it was too warm this morning for us to dispute the assertion. It is stated that Core3 circus will pilch its tent at Raleigh sometimo in Septem ber. At last accounts it was showing in Pennsylvania, but wai working South. Wonder if it will give Wilmington tho go by ? The Pharmaceutical Association of North Carolina met in annual session at Greensboro yesterday. Rev. J. All indications point to better times in the immediate future. Tho Durham Reporter says that the thermoruter stands at 99 degrees in the shade in thatlown. We shall not visit Durham during our vacation! It is almost unbearably hot here in Wil mington with the thermomeler ranging from 88 to 92 degrees, but when it reaches seven degrees higher than our highest point we shall try and "cut out" and go to the Sound or Smithvillo or some other cooler place on the sea shore. We noticed quite ja fine display of dog collars at ; J acoki's Hardware Depot. A JJeautif ill Sisrht. There was a "Children Fancy Dress Ball."" attha Pavilion of Hotel Bruns wick, at SmithviUe.on last Wednesday evening, and it was an occasion long to bo pleasantly remembered by the youth ful and beautiful participants as well a3 by those of more mature years, who had the pleasure of witnessing Jhe in teresting and entertaining scene. Some of the citizens of . that good old town had seen nn account in the papers of a fancy dress bail recently given at Long Branch, at which one, hundred children appeared in costume, and were - strack; with the idea that something of tho kind, on a smaller and more unassum ing scaic. might be gotten up at Smith ville, nnd went to work in good earnest to carry tho thought into execution. The result far exceeded their most san guine expectations, for they succeeded in getting up one of the finest entertain ments ever witnessed in the South, and one which would have done credit to any Northern city will all the appli ances of wealth, leisure and boasted culture, "At Ioiig' Branch .ivhVre" ."trib ute was paid to the occasion by tho children of all the great Nor: hern cities.' they succeeded in-lmving one hundred in costume, while at Smithvillo, with hardly any assistance from the outside world, fifty beautiful children partici pated in theentertainmcnt. aliof whom were dressed in elegant and appropris ato costunies. And lrere we fibd our selves in about the siimc dilemma as was the boy at a bountifully spread tabic who cried because he could not eat of all tho viands. We have not space nor time to describe all the ele gant costumes and a few must suffice, although we would gladly mention all, as all were eminently worthy. Miss Julia Daggett, appeared as one of the Peak Sisters from Alaska ; Mas ter Johnnie Daggett; as Tom my Tucker, and Miss Rhea Daggett. asaGipsey Girl. These three are the children of our friends Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Dag gett, and all were dressed with becom ing taste. Miss Sadie Kenan repre sented another of the Peak Sisters Miss Nellie Battle, as Undine, was ap propriately dressed in green and white tarletan with a trimming of seashells Miss Janio Meares and Miss Fannie Battle represented fairies and were bewitchingly beautiful. Master Cort landt Curtis was a vision ofa beautiful boy as Little Boy Blue, and Master Clarence Curtis represented a page of the olden lima in a costume of scarlet and white. Little Miss Mary Prioleau, as Mary. Mary, Quite Contrary; Mas ter Robbie Rouark, as Tom Thumb, and Master Frank Pinner, as a minia- ture gentleman ot the olden time, were all voted as especially good. Misses Carrie and Viola Weeks and Leila Thompson, were three radimtly beau tiful morning star3. Miss Emma Davis was good as .Mother Goose, and Master William Cottn made a first rate Uncle Sam. Miss: Emma Greenbaum repre sented a princess at play, in a charming Kate Greenaway dress. Miss Augusta Crapon, as an old grandmother, and Master Clarence Crapon, as a sailor boy, were both charming. But space will not permit us to pro long the description. Suffice it to say that all were tastefully, becomingly and appropria!ely costumed for the several characters they represented, and all entered into the spirit of the occasion with the will and earnestness of fresh and buoyant youth. There were bright young eyes sparkling with delight; fair young cheeks radiaut with happy smiles, and pure young hearts pulsat ing with rapture at the pleasures of the occasion. It was a tableaux of ex quisite beauty and one of which "all who participated, a3 well as those who witnessed the bewitching spcctacle.bad U3t reason to be proud. It Is Impossible For any concern that pays for their goods to undersell SIIRIER, foe the two following reasons: 1st. Shriek pays spot cash for every dollar's worth ef goods purchased. Jad. Our light expenses and econ omical arrangumeots'cnable us to sell goods at the very smallest profit possi ble, and our percentage of profit i3 fre quently much less than it costs other clothiers to pay for their enormous daily, expenses.
