Oood Farming
Mr, E. M. Johnion, of Pender rjdunly.
near Willard, sends us a boll of new
cotton picked from his Held on Saturday
last, the 22J inst. which is the first we
have heard of North of Wilmington.
Mr. Johnson says that his cotton is fine
and that he will commence picking in
about two weeks. His corn crop is also
very good. From three acres of corn he
gathered last week 2.100 pounds of
good, well cured, blade fodder, and
thinks he will get 150 bushels of corn
from the same piece of ground. This
is what we call good farming.
Personal

Magistrate's. Court.
Jim Collins and Lewis Jones, both
colored, were brought beiore Justice E.
D. Hall thi3 morning charged with the
larceny of six hams lrom Capt. John L.
Boatwright's store on North Front
street. The only witnesses for the State
were Capt. Boatwright. who identified
the stolen hams and the bag in which
they were placed as his property, and
Mr. R. J. Soutball, who. is registered
at the Purcjll Hou3e as from Colum
bia, S. C. The testimony of the latter
was convincing and conclusive, show
in? that the movements of the incul
pated parties had been closely watched
for several days. The property iv a3
found in the possession ot Collins, and
Jones was implicated so deeply that the
Magistrate required a bond of $300 each
from the defendants for their appear
ance at the next term of the Criminal
Court, in default of . which they were
committed.
Wedding Bells.
At halt past 8 o'clock this morning a
largo congregation bad assembled at
Front Street M. E. Church to wilnes3
tho impressive ceremony which should
"make Prof. M. C. S- Noble, principal
of the graded schools of tho city, and
Miss Alice C. Yarborough, one of the
teachers of Hctuenway School, hus
band and wife. A few minutes before
9 o'clock Mis3 Maltie Murray, tho or
ganist, struck the graud harmonies of
the Wedding March, and tho bridal
couple entered the church, proceeding
up the center aisle to tho altar, where
Rev. Dr. Yates was already awaiting
them and where he proceeded at once
to unite them in the holy bonds of mat
rimony. Tho ceremony being con
eluded the happy pair retired from the
church, followed by the throng," and
entered a carriage which was in wait
ing to convey them to the Front Street
depot. "Iu tho slight delay occasioned
by reaching and getting into the - car
riage Prof, and Mrs'. Noble received
many warm and earnest congratula
tions from their many friends. They
left on their bridal tour on the North
ern bound train lor New York and
other places of interest and will be ab
sent from the city several weeks before
their return. '

Yesterday' Gale. "
The gala ol yesterday, though inflict-1
ing serious damage to other localities,
dealt very kindly with us. - The maxi
mum velocity of the M9in was 52 miles
per hour at 5 o'clock p.; ni. At -about 4
p. ni., communication with Smithville
ceased and t that place has not -been
heard from since. The lines are dj wo,
all along the coast, and it is impossi
ble to secure reliable information from
points remote from the city. The Na
vassa Guano Works and the rice fields
on that portion of the Cape Fear escap'
ed serious" injury,- but at " the Sound a
good deal of damage was done. ? Many
trees were blown down and consider
able injury was sustained by the build
ings. Inr the city a great many trees
were blown down, a part of the iron
roof of the Front street depot, the roofs
ot St. Stephen's A. M. E. Church, the
store of Mr. D. Newman and the
boarding house of Mr. C. C. Corbin
were blown off and several others suf
fered considerable damage. The loss
was not great in any individual instance
but taken .in the aggregate it would
amount to quite a sum.
Tho 3teamer D .. Murchison, which ar
rived here tlm morning, reports that
there was no rain and only a brisk
breeze on the Cape Fear. There is
some apprehension for the safely of the
steamship Benefactor which was due
here yesterday from New Yorfe, but as
she is an excellent seaboat and is ably
commanded there is little good reason
tor serious alarm. She will probably
put in an appearance by to-morrow.
Mclntyre & Heath.
Our theatre goers may prepare for
something really enjoyable to-morrow
night. Wituess the foilowing from the
Rxbmohd Dispatch:
"The building was taxed to its ut
most to accommodate tho vast crowd ;
every seat was taken and standing
room was at a premium. In fact, be
fore the performance commenced the
sale of tickets was stopped and between
three and four hundred persons were
turned away from the doors. A better
minstrel performance has never been
scerrin this city. It Waff refined and
entirely free from coarseness and slang.
The -'New Telephone," by Messrs. Mc
lntyre. Heath, Kayneand Armstrong,
was a very pleasing finale. A new
feature introduced was tho shadow
graphs of the Braham brothers, which
were highly amusing and were received
with enthusiastic applause. Mr. Del
hauer, as the wonderful frog, gave a
most novel performance. The en
tertainment concluded with the comedy
ot 'Way Down South,' presenting a
life-like picture of scenes in the South
prior to the war. r The scenery and me
chanical effects were very fine." .
