At 3 o'clock this afternoon the ther. mometer in this office registered 84 de grees. . , .. There was no City Court this morn ing. Every one seems to be bent on good behavior. Nor barque Insular Caon, Daniel. sen, from this port, arrived at Liver pool last Saturday. The band of the Standard Dramatic Company paraded our streets this morning and played some very fine music. -i Fruit growers will find an interesting article, on , tbe curculio bug, on the fourth page of this issue, from the pen of Capt. R. P. Paddison. The steamship Gulf Stream, from New York, arrived at her wharf in this city at about half-past 11 o'clock this forenoon, promptly on time. There will be a match game of base ball at the Seasido Grounds to-morrow afternoon between two' well-matched juvenile clubs, the Somersets and the Amateurs. After some very threatening weather and heavy rains yesterday; it began to clear off towards night and this morn ing was full of sunshine and as pleasant as could be desired. The Othello. Two adults were white and all the remainder were colored. There is a ereat demand in Charles ton. S. C for tin roofers, and we learn that several have -gone there from this city. In the recent hurricane there nearly all of the buildings which were covered with tin were unroofed hence the demand. . Auctioneer Price, corner of Market and Second streets, has in store a large number of both handsome and useful articles which are being sold by him at auction on commission. There was a sale this morning and a large attendance and there will be another special sale to-morrow night. The sidewalk on the East side of Seventh street, near the corner of Mar ket, is excellent in dry weather, but is a nuisance after a shower. It is consid erably lower than the place where the gutter ought to be. and alter every rain is nearly over shoes in water. 1 he trouble could be easily remedied. Remember the excursion on the russport of the Cornet Concert Club, which will take place tormonow. It will probably be the last excursion given by them this season and the weather promises to be all that could be desired. , There is every inducement for a large party. The music will be of the best, refreshments will be for sale at city prices, and the best of order will bo preserved. Oar Iriends, the ladies of the Front Street M. E. Church, will give' another of their enjoyable excursions to Smith ville and the Forts on the steamer Passport, on Thursday, the 3 J instant. The management will make every ex ertion for a pleasant and enjoyable ex cursion. Refreshments will be served at city prices, and we doubt not that a large party will avail themselves of the opportunity afforded for a day's ride upon the waters of the Cape Fear. Cotton. Foreign- 6 barques, 2,437 tons, and 2 briss. 482 tons, making a total of 8 vessels and 2,919 tons, and a grand total of29ves3els aggregating 10,561 tons. Tableaux and Music. Our good friends at Point Caswell are looking forward with anticipations ot much pleasure to the evening of Fri day, the llth inst.. on which occasion there will be tableaux and music in Black's Hall for the benefit of Caswell Baptist Church. The programme pre sented ia a very attractive one and will be sure to draw a large attendance. We understand that a number of ladies and gentlemen in this city propose at tending and this can readily be done as a steamer will lcaye here about noon on the dav mentioned, returning the next day. Yachting. The next regatta of the Carolina Yacht Club will be sailed over the Wrightsyille course on the afternoon Thus far of Thursday, the 3rd inst. the folio wine: named yachts have been entered for the race : Lillian Florence Cant. Other yachts may possibly enter in season for the race, but some of tnem received injuries in the late gale which will prevent them from participating in the regatta. To tbe .Benevolent. Capt. F. M. James has devoted much of his time and labor for several years to the nursing of the sick, a duty for whxh he is remarkably well adapted and which seems Jo be congenial to him. In the perlormance of this duty, which is to him a religious obligation, he has been ready at all hours to respond to calls where his services were needed and in doing this ha3 been unable to attend to securing his own means of livelihood. His services are mainly deroted to those who aro in poor and needy circumstances and unable to pay for the requisite nursing so that Capt. James receives no compensation for his labors. In view of these fact3, to gether with the very necessary and im portant duties which he is constantly performing, it has beenjsuggested and we think the suggestion a 'good one that the benevolently disposed in our midst should contribute to his needs by giving small sums ot money, which may be left at Yates' bookstore, for his benefit. Individual contributions need be but small, but with a general re sponse the aggregate would be consid erable and would be a great help to a worthy and useful man. Last nizht was extremely ; uulavora Die tor theatre goers, yet mere was something more than a fair audience a1 the Opera House to witness the Gypsy play of "Zingara," by the "Standard Drajnaiic Company. The play was put upon the stage in good shape and was rendered to the entire satisfaction of the audience. The leading charac ters, male and female, were' well im personated, and the support was in the main very good. ' We think that in some respects there has been a decided improvement in the company since it was last here, and this seems to be a general impression. To night they will presept Bartley Campbell's celebrated play of "My Partner," which has bad an almost unprecedented run in New York and other Northern cities, and we doubt not, as the price ot admission is placed within the reach of all, that there will be an overflowing house to greet them. A correspondent at Excelsior, in Brunswick county, writes us of the death, near that place, on the night of Saturday, -the 22d inst., of Mr. Benj.
