The American mind, ha said, is disposed to believe in the reality of things and will not admit (bat know! edge is unattainable. Hence the Amer ican philosophy will have t its basis realism as opposed to idealism and agnosticism. It must almit the truth of cvolutioo, but with rigid. restrictions. The late Mrs. Mary J. Morgan, of New York, had the largest collection of orchids ever owned by any private person, which cosi$200,000. The plants are now being sold in New York, It took lour florists a week to catalogue the collection. The plants number 2,000 Of these nearly 400 were sold thefimday lor about $7,000. There were ICO plants which were sold for over $10 each, and 65 which brought over $25. The highest price obtained for a single plant was $750. An English molder arrived in Phila delphia a lew days ago, having, with his wile and six children, walked all the way from Petersburg, Va , to take passage on she steamer Indiana to bis native island. All the steamers sailing from Philadelphia and New York for the past nine months have been carry ing as many stecraee passengers back to Europe as they have been bringing hither. Many of the returning immi grants are miners, some farmers, and some skilled artisans who find it harder to make a living in the United States than in Europe. The English and Welsh coal miners who are going back to England complain that they are driven out of employment by the Poles and Slavs. This tide of outgoing labor is a pregnant commentary upon the Value of protection. The Washington Star, says: "It seems that Senator Gorman is not lo have entirely smooth sailing in his race 'or re election to the Senate. The op position to him within his own party is making itself heard, and threatens to make itself felt. Along the canal in sntue localities Democrats assert that they will not vole for any Legislative candidate who .will not pledge himself against Gorman. In Baltimore there is serious talk of running independent or fusion tickets against the regular Democrats. Should the party divide in Baltimore, the result might be the loss of the legislature to the Demo cracy, as tho delegation from the city and county is, because of its number, an important element in that body. The opponents of the Senator are bitter and unrelenting. They appear to be willing to resort to almost any political tactics to compass bis defeat. Still, he is a wonderfully hard man to beat, as the Maryland braves who have sought his Fcalp heretofore have found to their cost." The Washington correspondent of tte Cincinnati Enquirer says: "In spite of any denials to the contrary, it can be stated with directness that the Re publicans are preparing to abandon their bloody shirt campaign in Ohio and make the tarifl take its place. Senator Sherman, if not yet advised, ought to havo been by this time through the campaign committee; but leading Republicans inNew York and Penn sylvania haye protested against tho war issues being made prominent, 'and the result is the halt is to be called. Those who have advised the withdrawal of the sectional issues notified ihe Ohio lead ers that a canvass conducted on tboee issues to the finish would certainly lose Hamilton County and other ci.ies hav ing a commercial trade. What, how' ever, has influenced Sherman & Co. to aj take the back track, was the refusal ot Eastern business men to contribute any money to the Ohio canvass so long as the campaignwa9 waged upon issues which struck at the very heart ot com mercial relations. It was here the shoe pinched. Mr. Sherman is now ready to yield a further agitation of war issues not that he cares how much it may hurt business in Cincinnati, but only because by so doing he can . get ' finan cial aid from the capitalists of the East." Father L. E. Conrady, who has been living among the Indian tribes , in the West for fifteen years in the capacity of a missionary, is in Washington for the purpose of presenting to the Ad ministration for; its consideration a plan which, he claims trom -his many years bl experience among tbeni. swill make the Indians self-supporting in a very few years, and will at ' the same time restore to tho public domain . mil lions ot acres of land now lying idle Mr. CoDrady saja tho Indiaa tribes all through tha country hold too much land. The plan which he proposes is to form on each of the reservations a number of 'colonies,- to be composed of at least fifteen young men.C tn . each of whom should be allotted 100 acreaof land. At , the head of each colonya practical farmer should be placed, who. for the first year, would instruct the Indians in farm work. The tallowing year,, although the woik is to be contir. ucd with another party of Indians, those of the first'year could be encouraged and assisted in their training so as to push them farther ahead to become efficient and skilful farmers. The International CigarMakers7 Association of Cincinnati have in structed their president to begin legal proceedings asaiost Roscoe Conkling for the recovery of the $L000 retainer fee which be accepted . when he agreed to defend the Tenement House bill, and for which he never performed any ser vices, positively rciusmg to move a finger in compliance with his contract with the International president If we would have powerful minds, we must think; if faithful hearts, we must love; if powerful muscles, wo must labor: if we would cet rid ot a bad cough, we must tafee ur. una s Cough Syrup.
