The revenue cutter Colfax, while crnisingoff Hatteras on the 15th inst, discovered the British barque Espiegle, from Jamaica for Falmouth, Eng., in a sinking condition, anchored close in to the beach below Ocracoke Inlet. Took her in tow on the morning of the 16:h and brought her to the sea buoy off the Caps Fear bar. When taken in tow the barque had seven feet of water in her hold. The crew abandoned her on the previous evening, but finding the breakers too high for landing.concluded to return and take their chances on board the vessel. She will be towed up to the city as soon as the tide will permit. Jacobi's Hdw. Depot is the place to buy a stove, if you want to save money t Sudden Death. A telegram was received in this city this forenoon from Philadelphia an nouncing the death in that city yester day afternoon of Rev. J. D. Cooke Jones. He was a Wcsleyan Methodist min ister, who recently came from London on the steamship Cam Marlh, now lying in our port,, with tho hope that a sea voyage would benefit his health, which from overwork had been very much impaired. On last Sabbath morning he preached a most excellent sermon in Front Street Methodist Church, and on Tuesday night left to visit friends in Philadel phia. Sad news indeed to those whose hearts were stirred by bis eloquence and whose sympathies were so much on listed in this most excellent young min ister. Opera House. There was a fair audience at the Opera House last night to witness the performance ot the society drama, en titled the "Banker's Daughter." We havo spoken of the merits of this play and tho company by whom it was per formed, on previous occasions, and the praise w bestowed upon it then, we reiterate nowr It is a play of sterling worth and the company is first rate. Every actor and actress last night seemed imbued with the spirit of the I nes, in consequence of which the play was rendered in first rate style and with much effect. The same play, by the same company, will be presented again to-niht.when we hope there will be a crowded house. The matinee , to day was very well attended. The most economical coal scuttles known are the galvanized iron ones. They never rust. You will find them at Jacobi's Hdw. Depot. :f t ' Women are not inventive as a rale. They have no eagerness for new wrinkles. A Fine Doll. In the window of Capt.. R. AI. Mc Intire's dry goods store on Front street this morning was a beautiful doll which has been presented to St'. Thomas' Church for raffle, by Mrs. Kate Alex ander, of Rock Hill, S. C. The doll , is dressed as a bride in white satin, trim mod . with oriental lace and . court train It is thirty-two inches in height and a bridal, veil covers the face and form ttnd ; reaches .to the floor. The tickets, some of which have been taken already, are 25 cents each. M 5 " Beware of Parties ; that hold out tempting baits. . Honest goods and low prices , are the - only ih duceuichts necessary. If more is re quired the patron must pay for the ex tras pro rata, as hundreds of our pat rons have, and who can truly testify that such are facts. We have saved our customers many dollars when, they have taken the time and trouble to compare our goods and prices with scheming competitors. This is tho only true and reliable test. rVo will cheerfully send goods to your residence, letting you.be tho judge. Wo have a standing offer to donate $100 to any charitable institution in this city, if $100 worth of goods selected from our large stock, viz : clothing for men, boys and children, gents' furnishing goods, and hats and caps, are not found to be 15 per cent, less than the identical goods, of as good value, can be had elsewhere; in many cases we would be safe in saying 25 per cent It is very gratifying to us to know that our trade ! has increased, which goes to show that notwithstanding the different schemes and new competition We have to contend with the masses will not be gulled, preferring rather to trade where goods can be had for the least money, and whoever offers other inducements with their goocb, you will find that the purchaser is taxed either directly or indirectly- to support these schemes.
