In 1877 I was admitted to the Hospital. The doctors said I had a hole in my lung as big as a half dollar. At one time a report went around that I was dead. I gave up hope, but a friend told, me of DR. WILLIAM HALL'S BALSAM FOR THE Ungs. I got a bottle, when, to my surprise. I commenced to get well, and to day 1 feel better than for three years." Boys JLMedged to Abstinence. A new secret society! .is rapidly spreading its membership-through the Protestant Episcopal churches ot this city- ,Iur, members are all . boys, and they wear when in conclave brilliant uniforms and glistening swords, and carry banners of silk. When they doff the nniforn a handsome badge worn on the breast marks their membership in the secret order. The badge bears the motto, "Sobriety, Purity, Reverence." The new society is the Knights of Temperance and Parity. It is the outgrowth of the While Cross Society that . was started in this country a ' year ago to establish among men a code ot personal purity and to crush out tho social vice. Yes terday Dr. Costa, pastor of the Church of St. John the Evangelist, who is a leader in the White Cross movement and an active supporter of the new se cret body, preached a sermon about the young knights to his congregation. He said that the body wa3 gaining a strong hold upon the army ot youthful Christians who attend the churches, and was gradually accomplishing tho purpose that prompted its organiza tion. .This purpose was to help the young boys . to keep their bantismal vows, and to train them in habits of personal purity that would make them clean-hearted and pure-minded men. The boy knights have an elaborate and beautiful ritual, and the surround ings at their conclave are made very attractive and pleasant. Every young knight takes this pled go when he joins tbeorder: I promise, with the help of God, to abstain wholly, from strong drink as long as I continue a member of this order. .Moreover, I. acknowledge it always to be my duty toi avoid what ever words and f'teds are indecent or profane. Every knight understands that the pledge of temperance means not alone abstinence from intoxicating drinks, The Secret of Liiyinsr.
