Elsbach, Prop f Some of the merchants complain that there is but little business as compared with previous Christmas seasons, but every body seems to be buying, and nearly every one wo meet is burdened down with paicel3 and bundles. North Carolina hams are scarce here at this time, but Mr. W. H. xopp, on South Front street, has a nice lot, which are advertised in this issue. A Christmas dinner in North Carolina is not complete without a North Carolina ham. Mr. Geo. M. Crapon is doing all ho can Ho accommodate his customers, He is kept pretty busy at his family grocery on South Front street now in receiving goods and sending them out. He has nice. new. fresh goods and which the attention of the public through advertisement in this issue. Master Frank K. Myers is the agent in this city for Royal Glue, which is re puted to be an inseparable liquid cement, for the mending of all sorts of articles that require mending by adhe sion. He will sell only by wholesale, and will be ready to -fill orders in a few days. Notice was posted on the blackboard of the Produce Exchange to-day that the Liverpool Cotton Exchange will be closed from; the 24th to the 28th iust., and again from the 31st inst. to Janu ary 4th, 1880. The New York Cotton Exchange will be closed on the 25th and 26th inst., and again on January 1st and 2nd, 18 SO. Capt. T. J. Southerland, who is the agent here for the Columbus (Ohio) Buggy Company, has just hnng in his office a handsome colored print issued by the Company, which it a striking and effective j picture. It is entitled "Columbus presenting to the King and Queen of Spain trophies secured in the New WorldV . Mr.' J. R. Melton bas made big ar rangements for this Xmas. He can supply anybody and everybody with anything and everything in his line, delivered promptly and in splendid condition: He is booking orders now largely for Christmas meats and poul try, and a hint to the wise in this line ought to be sufficient. We saw this morning at Mr. W. H. Yodp's store the most beautiful oysters, in the bucket, we have ever yet encoun tered. It is no exaggeration to say that some of them were as large as a lady's hand. They were not for sale but form ed part of a lot of 150 gallons which were being shipped by Mr. Yopp to the order of one party in the country. Diplomas Awarded. We are glad to learn that Mr. A . Y, Wilson, of this city, has been awarded diplomas both by the North Carolina State Fair and the Virginia State Fair for tho bestMMontross" metalicshingles exhibited. The .diplomas, although differinz materially in design, are both elegant and chaste and are well worthy of preservation. We also learn that the melalic shingles for which he is the agent are very much observed and ad mired wherever he has exhibited them. For the Sick. i There are quite a number of sick per sons at the city hospital who will be deprived of any of the pleasures of Christmas, unless they are kindly re membered by the charitably disposed 01 our citizens. We hope that they will not be forgotten, bnt may be made distributed on Christmas occasions. .. Crazy Quilt. There was a large audience at thcOperai House-last 'night to witness the rendi-1 tion of the above named play. The performance was not as good as was hoped and there were a good many de lays owing in part to the obstinacy of the scenery, which made it somewhat tedious, yet there was a spirit ot deter j mined good nature pervadiog the house that compensated lor any shortcom ings olhewrise. ' For Christmas. Capt. F. M. James will start on Thursday morning on his rounds of col lection for the poor of tho city, and will distribute the contributions as fast as they are received.! It is his wi3h that the contributions may; be distributed in season for ail the needy and, worthy poor of the city to be supplied for Christmas. We trust that our citizens will respond promptly, for "sweet charity's sake." City Court. It was a sort of feminine matinee at the City Court rcom this morning as the following will show: Henrietta McNeill, colored, charged with disorderly conduct, was fined $3 Betsey Crawford, also colored, for a like offense, was fined $5. Virginia Brown, another colored damsel, for a like offense, was required to pay a fine of $3 or go below for 10 days. Audic and Finance. The Board of Audit and Finance con vened in regular session at the City Hall yesterday afternoon. Present: W. I. Gore, Esq., Chairman, and Messrs John W. Gerdts. R. J. Jones and C. F. VonKampen. The minutes of the last regular session were read and ap proved, and bills against the city amounting to $103.61 were audited. The Beard adjourned, to-meet in joint session with the Board of Aldermen at 3 o'clock to-morrow afternoon at the City Hall, to consider the matter of paving South Water street with Bel gian blocks. Revenue service, but says that at present it is only a "dress parade" appointment, as he! has not yet received his warrant to proceed to busi ness, and his pay does not commence until that arrives.
