The bald head ot Senator Isham G.

energetic effort of a Federal cavalry
man to end the Southerner's career on
the battlefield of Shiloh. Mr. Harriss.

Imprisonment for one year follows j

execution carried out. This, however,
no Governor has yet done in that State.
The great question of the! sinfulness
of raffles is not permitted to rest io
Scotland. The Free Church Presby

large majority that raffling is notr only
contrary to the law of the land, but to
the law or God. "and cannot be regard

tbe practice is dishonoring to God, who
is irreverently appealed to as disposer

The Christmas Eve Services at the
Seamen's Bethel were conducted by Rev
F. W. E. Peschau. of St. Paul's Luth
eran Church, in the language of tfeeScau
dinavians. This was appropriate as
pearly all of those present were of that
Northern race and they could not have
understood the import of a sermon de
livered in the - English tongue. Rev.
Mr.. Peschau is an accomplished lin
guist and speaks the Scandinavian
tongue in its native purity ; a fact which,
combined with a fine enunciation and
pleasing oratery, made his sermon im
pressive and deeply interesting to those
hardy sons of Norway who fgo down
to tbe sea in ships and do business
upon the great waters." There was
a large congregation present, mainly
composed of foreign seafaring men.and
liberal contributions were made tow
ards purchasing an organ for the Bethel.
