Loring, one of the most prominent characters of tho age, died in New York n Thursday even ing last, at.the St. Denis Hotel, of pneus monia, aged 70 years. He was a native of this city and his career was a varied and'interesliog one- We copy from the New York Stir of Friday's date: The event was unexpected, At th c u time of his death the only persons with him were his. niece, Mrs. Knight, and her husband, his nephew, Mr. Charles Lorinz, and Major George W. Knight and wife. General Loring was in ex cellent health on Wednesday morning, laughing.and chatting as was his custom, but toward noon he was stricken down, and he grew worse rapidly' until the end. He was ill only eighteen hours The career of General Loring has been an eventful one. He was born in Wiiminetoo, N. C, in 1817, but while yet an infant his parents went to reside in Honda. While at school he ran away from his studies and enlisted in the Untted Stales army, but was speedily brought back by his lather and fprced to complete his education at George town College, District of Columbia. In 1835, when the Texan war of in dependence broke out. .he once more enlisted and served there with changing fortunes, until tht Mexican war. into which lie rushed with the impetuosity for which he was characterized, and In which he remained until the battle of Chcpullepec, where he losthis left arm, and retired with the title ot major-in tha United States army.
