L.Russell continues to im prove, with a fair prospecl.tbat he will be able to be out in a few days. In Good Order. As was anuounced last week, a evil eral alarm was sent out from box 14 precisely at noon today, for the pur pose of testing the cfilcieucy of the fire alarm system. There was some excite ment on the streets for a few moments, as some thought there was a tiro in reality; but it soon subsided when it was seen that the firemen paid but lit tie attention to the matter. Tbo lest was entirely satisfactory and showed that the system was in complete work ing order. In Ibis connection, it has been suggested that, instead of sending out a regular alarm once a wceV, it would be belter to strike the bell 12 times daily at precisely noon. By this means there would be a certainty of the good working order of the system, and the boor ol the day would be deter- mtnea at me same umef ; 1 WILMINGTON. N. Tho rxerciscs at the First Baptist Sunday School yesterday afternoon were unusually interestinsr. Mr. James E. Witlsbn. who has rendered frequent seryice to the Sunday School, was pres ent and conducted the singing with his cornet. Several songs were sung, after which came, the regular recitations. These being concluded, another song was given, and then Mr. J: S. Mitchell. Superintendent of the School, in behalf of the teachers and pupils, in a few ap propriate and feeling i em arks present ed Mr. Willson with, an elegant andenv tirely unique testimonial, as a slight token of their appreciation of his gener ous efforts to assist tbem in their ser vice of song. Mr. Willson gracefully responded in a few well selected words, at the conclusion of which the benedic tion was pronounced and the school was dismissed- The testimonial is a gold scroll, upon which. is inscribed : "Presented to Prof. J, E Willson by the First Baptist Sunday, SchojuUl SuspendoVfrom---the -'scroll by two rgold chains is a golden wreath, in the centre of which is a miniature gold cornet suspended by two short gold eliains from the upper ends of the wreath The design was gotten up br, Mr. George- W. Huggins. in whose window the testimonial has been on exhibition during the day. It is an elegant affair, and one that reflects much credit upon the Sunday School. Mr. Willson, upon many occasions, has cheerfully given the aid of his valuable services to the school, and this beautiful token of their appreciation of his efforts is both time ly and well-deserved Largest slock coilars and cuffs, neck wear and halt hose in the city is at Munson's t Mis Turlington. Mr. W. J. Tho conversation shows the conlidence and love she reposed in Waller Bingham, and the high esteem in which she was held by people in other States. The following are' extracts from the letter: "Oa the day of my taking, leave of you all. Miss Turlington asked me at the breakfast tabic whether I would like to marry her and her lover next summer, which surprised me not a little, and to which II replied in the afliruialive. She said that he wanted to marry her at Christmas, but that she preferred next suninter.' I told her that 1 would like to know the lrver' name, but she declined to give it. Then she made me promise not to let anybody know itr I had no idea who her lover .was. until the terrible news of the tragedy reached me, when I was greatly surprised to find out J who her intended husband was. She requested me to conduct a scr vice in Wilmington, N. C. next sum mer for her benefit and that of her deaf mule friends, which I promised to do. to her great joy. . A few minutes before leaving your school, she toolTme to her room to se the deaf mule girls sewing. They seemed to be much devoted to her.
