One hundred and four of those present voted aye. and fiye voted no. This is emphatic and sis iiilicant of public centinaent in the Stale upon this bill. Sheriff Wrard still holds on. however, as he was informed by the Board of Commissioners that he is skill in office, and will be until the February meeting of the Board. There arc two classes of pilots now on the Cape Fear, one of' which eon sists ot what is known as tho bar pilots, and the olhar comprises the river pilots. The former of these are embowered to pilot vessels over the bar either in going to or coming from sea, while the latter are allowed to pilot vessels between Smithyi'.Ie and this port. The duties and powers of each class are separate and distinct, but a movement is now on foot among the pilots to have these duties and powers merged, so that the pilot who brings a vessel in from sea, over the bar. may remain in charge until she reaches this city, and the pilot who takes a vessel from here shall re main in charge until she. is at sea. riiis Morning's Fire. At about 5 o'clock this morning lire was discovered in the one story frame building' on tbo Southeast corner of McRae and Campbell streets, occupied by Mr.C. Schmidt as a grocery store and barroom. This distinguished actress, with a a carefully selected Company, will ap pear at the Opera House in this city next Monday night. In speaking of her remarkable versatility as an actress, a competent critio gives utterance to lhe following: '".' v 5 Miss Arnot' career on the American stage has been a succession of artistic and popular triumpns, anu me extraor dinary, range and variety ot character which she has shown herself capable of portraying is a constant surprise to all who have watched the development ol hergenius, "From gay to grave "she can pass with easy step, and sfie s equally at home in tragedy and comedy. One night we are melted to tears by the tbrilliogand tender pathos ol Leah, the Forsaken, and tbo next we are con vulsed with mirth at the racy humor which permeates every action, look and tone of the widow of the late Dennis O' Brien. Between these two interpreta tions there is ample scope for the exer cise of a dramatic faculty which is ver satile to a degree not attained by any other actress on the American stage to day. Miss Arnot possesses the rare gift of the genuine artist of completely losing ber individuality and identifying herself with the character she is.delint atiog. A notable instance of this may be seen In the swift transitions required in "The Little Detective." where she assumes five distinctly different types ot character in one play. She makes each one of - the characters a distinct creation for the moment. Editor Review A meeting of the Board of Trustees of this Institution was held in Raleigh on Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 18ih and 19ih inst. The extraordinary interest manifested by the Board was disclosed by 'the presence of a pretty, largo number of members and letters from many who were unable to attend, besides letters from friends and statements of action of official boards All of which was encouraging. The desire in tho public mind for the election of a President met at hearty response from tho Board of Trustees, knowug as we did that such desire could be no more earnest and intense tbatf'that felt by the Board. The purposeand intention ot the Board is to put a man in tbo position of Pres ident who shall, by his qualifications for the placo. meet the expectation and approval of the Church and the public. But hcking much necessary infor mation and, at present, ways and means- for securing such a desirable result, a committee was appointed of some of the best bnsincss men in the State to take the matter into immedi ate consideration and report at the meeting of thelioard in June, or earlier if possible The committee, consisting of Col. J. W. Alspaugh, Dr. L. S. Burkhead, Rev. J. . Mann, J. S. Carr and Jas. A. GrayvE?qrs., was also instructed to prepare a Plan for Endowment and proceed to operate the same as speedily as possible. In the meantime the College is sue oessfully at work, with a faculty every way competent; and the Board takes pleasure in being able to say that Methodist parents need have no hesita lion in sending their sons to Trinity College, receiving as they will, lit' they desire to receive it, both intellectual and moral culture.
