JANUARY 1'ersonai. . Our good friend. Mr. J. T. Collins, of Bnrgaw. was in the city to day and paid us a pleasant visit. We are glad to see Hon. Daniel L. Russell on the streets again.- He ap pears to have -about fully recovered from his recent severe and dangerous illness. We received a. pleasant call this morning Irom Mr R. B. Marsh, Busi ness Manager of the Cora Van Tassel Dramatic Company, and we are pleas ed to announce the fact that this com pany wilt play here a week, commenc ing on the firsi. Monday in February. They come to us well recommended, as they played ir. Raleigh all of last week and the people ther were so much pleased with them that they have en" gaged to give two more ' performances there next week.; Their prices are the same as those oi the IsmUe Arnol Company and they have a good troupe and a fine repertoire. A larg ine ot underwear will be sold regardless of profits at Munson's fur nishing rooms. f L.ouiae Arnot. This talented actress appeared last night in the t'tle role of the tragic drama of '"Leah, the Forsaken," which was her fifth appearance before a Wil mington audience The assemblage was the largest with which she has been greeted. In fact the house was literally packed hy a den3e throng o appreciative ladies and gentlemen who sat ppell bound by her wooderlul im-i personation of the character of the for saken Jewess. The people had seen her in rollicking comedy and had been delighted At her drolleries, and these were those who attended last night who had grave fears that she would not be equal to a deep and thrilling tragedy that would call for the display of the most profound and fioUhed histrionic powers. Tncse fears proved utterly groundless, for irom the moment she appeared like a frightened lawn pur sued by an intolerant and relentless mob of persecutors, she had the sympathy of all present. In the love scene with Itudilfh there was a tenderness and devotion which was charming in its pathos. But it was in the fourth act, when the perfidy ot Rudolph wasdevol oped, that she rose to the highest re quirements of the occasion, and become the wiongod and forsaken Leah, when tenderest love had turned to the direst hate- The audience were spell bound by the intensity of her crayings tor revenge, and a she heaped fearful curses upon the 'head, house, family and torlune ot ber -recreantlover and spurned him with loathing in bis deep humiliation, she seemed almost a fiend incarnate. Perhaps the most tender and touching pathos ot the play was displayed in the last act. when she dis covered that liudolplCs child had bceu given her namj. She was intensely realistic throughout the character, and fairly established the fact that she ts as goodii not hotter in tragedy as she is in comedy. The cast last night was all that could be desired, making a perfor mance of deep interest and rare merit Business suits and overcoats at very low prices can be obtained at Munson's clothing rooms. t The Oyster to the Clam. Ko- ko will be lonely without a Pooh-Bah, I suggest that from among the earnest advocates, or promoters, or subscribers ot other people's money, who want to hear an engine toot on Point Peter, and are "willing to the city paying for the whistle.77 you elect one in whom shall be combined all the offices of mayor, aldermen, auditors, and directors of in teral improvements; that he be requir ed to raise, as at present, $120,000 per annum to Day the interest we now owe and rua the city as it has been ; extend $100.000 aid to the Onsbw Railroad; give $150 000 lo the Yadkin Valley boys : establish and maintain a tree ferry; refund $151,000 eight per cent, bonds due this year and next into five or six per cent-ers ; do all this without raising your taxes lo three, three and a quarter, or three and a half per cenl., and at the wame time maintain your city bonds at their present premium, and yonr city's credit at its present high standard. ; If Pooh-Bah fails to do all this then the Lord High Executioner to cat off bis head, and hang bis garments on the outer wall ot your "scarcophagus" as an example to all vain dtceivers.
