journals is Verdi's new opera, which

Audit and Finance was held yesterday
afternoon. Present: W. I. Gore,
Chairman, and Messrs. Wai. Calder

The Board met in regular monthly
sesiiou at the City Hall last night.
Present: Mayor Hall, and Aldermen

The proceedings of the last meeting
were read.
Alderman Giles moved to amend the
minutes ol the nieeing of January 11th
by inserting alter Alderman Worth's
resolution, the wortls "The resolution
was accepted by Alderman Giles."
Alderman McEachern moved that, as
an am ndment, the minutes beapprov
c.l. Hi moli m was a touted.
Alderman B-ar subiu tted th petition
ot the C. F. S F. E Co., wiih the en
dorsement of the Chief of the Fire De
partmcnt. On motion the matter ot
the purchase ot a new engine was or
dered to lie over until the next fiscal
year.

concerning payment ot full amount of
$125 allowed for two months. Refer
red to committee on Firo Department.
Aldermen Giles called the attention of
the Board to the uced of buildings at
Price's Creek, for quarantine purposes,
and moved that Dr. G. G. Thomas bo
heard on the subject.
Dr. Thomas appeared before- tho
Board and asked co-operation in the
efforts of the Quarantine B ard in se
curing from the General Assembly an
appropriation of $7,000. for the purpose
ot securing necessary buildings.
Alderman Bear moved thatlheareso
iulion of Alderman Gile3 offered at the
meeting ot January 11th, 1B87, in the
matter ot the report of the Cape Fear &
Yadkin Valley Railroad Commission
be taken up.
The chair ruled that the motion was
not in order, aa he considered that the
resolution of Alderman Giles had been
withdrawn at that meeting.
Alderman McEachern moved to re
consider the vote on Alderman Boney's
resolution as had at the meeting held
January 1 1th. Adopted.
Tho Mayor stated that Alderman Bo
ney's resolution, to refer the report of
the Commisioners back to them for
amendment, was before the Board.
Alderman Boney called tor the ayes
an i noes on his resolution. Aldermen
Bear. Bon9y, Worth and McEachern
voted no; Aldermen Giles and Hewitt
in the affirmative. The resolution was
not adopted

Commissioners was taken upon motion
ol Alderman Boney. and was voted
down; Aldermen Giles, Boney. Hewitt

The freight and passenger train which
eft Charlotte at 8:15 Ian night, on the
Carolina Central Railroad, wan thrown
from the track when about two miles
East of Matthews' Station, in conse
quence of one of the rails having been
removed by soma sound rel. The en
gine was rolled down the embankment
and two cars were thrown Ironi the
track.' The engineer and fireman were
slightly injured, but none of the passen
gers were hnrt. The train was moving
at a slow rale of speed nt tho time,
which probably was the reason that a
fatal accident to the engineer or fireman

There was & full attendance at the
Opere House last eight nearly every
seat befog taken to witness the initial
performance of the Cora Van Tassel
Company who are billed here for the
present week. The play selected was
"Fanchon, the Cricket,1' in wbich Miss
Van Tassell appeared in the title role.
She is a most charming woman with a
good stage presence, a sweet voice and
mobile features which fully expresssed
her emotions, and at once won the
hearts and sympathies ot her auditors
Much of her acting was really fine,
but there were certain stagey manner
isms that somewhat detracted from the
efiect of her impersonation of that way-
wara cnaracier. ane is evidently a
painstaking and conscientious artist,
who is fully devoted to her proles?ion,
and is far superior to many who have
appeared here as star5.". Some of her
support was go id. and some was not.
but taken as a whole the play was well
given, and the - audience were well
pleased. Some of the most beautiful
and p&tbetic portions of. tho dialogue.
however, were lost to the listeners in
consequence of the intolerable ill-mannered
rudeness of some of those in the
gallery and in the dTess circle Their
noise was the cause of universal com
plaint. We hope that it may not be
repeated. To-night the company will
present a double bill and every indica
tion points to a crowded house. The
emotional Irish drama, 'Kathleen
Mavourncen," will be the first piece
and this Will b9 followed by the laugha
ble comedy, "Uncle Joshua .Whit
comb " The latter play has been made
famous by Mr. Denman Thompson.
Incidental to the play of "Ka'hlccn
Mavourneen," Mr. John Hoyt's acting
dog. "Pat," wiil b8 introduced.
