There is no disguising tho fact that there is a big scare in this city, amount ng in some sect'nni to almost a panic, relative to the presenca.of scarlet fever among us. Id hear some people talk about it one would imaie that a terri ble epidemic is ragi.ur here, and yet there is absolutely no cause whatever for it. lhys:cians toll us that although there is scarlet fever in the city, yet that there is no epidemic, nor is there any danger of one. that there are not more perhaps than a d--z m cases in the "city, that these are all of a mild type' and that there has been but ono malignant case developed here at all. In view of these facts the present popu ar excitement on the subject isnol only unwise but it is absurd Attempted Arson. A dastardly attempt was made by some scoundrel who richly deserves to stretch hemp, at about 7 o'clock last night, to destroy the school bouse for colored children, on Fifth street, be- tween Red Cros3 and Campbell. The Northeast corner of tho buifding had been saturated with kerosene oil, which had been bc3n ignited, but fortunately the fire was discovered before the flames bad gained headway, and was extinguished by those living in the yicinity. The alarm was sent out from box 43, corner ol Sixth and Red Cross streets, and the nrenlon turned out promply. but their services were not needed. , It was a wicked act, and we sincerely hope the guilty party may be discovered and made to snffer th? lull penalty of the law. Mr. W. Dr. Lane, in his report to us says: "The small buildings now in use as a colored ward are in a very unsatisfactory condition for the proper treatment of that Glas3 of patient; they are very much out of repair: without water facilities, closets. or baih roonls; requiring extra fires In each room, and o;l lamp3 for occupauls of house. And in consequence to their near location to the street, it is next to impossible to keep convalescents from! roing out at night and from receiving improper visitors." It is absolutely necessary to do something to these small houses, ami wo would most r spectlully urge your honorable body, i it is possible, to make an appropriation sutlicient for tho erection of another wan, wh:c il dot c, wi.l give us an institution complete in itself, an oru muitt to the city and county and a monument to the benevolence of our community in providing this noble chat ii y ftr I he careuf ltio!o .who would otherwise sutler if it did uot exist. ; il is a mutter of cougiatulalion that this institution is now on a firm bsts. provide! wilb a. good medical library, a good number ol surgical appliances and instruments, provided from time to time at the suggestion of tho super inteudent. and which, wo trust; we can complo'o in the next year or two by adding to as our funds will ptrniit The ladies of our community have ta ken an interest in oar institution. . and have- aided us greatly by providing! clothing and furnishing our reception rom with books and furniture, for which we are thankful.
