At about noon ycs'eiday as the
through friegbl train of the Wilmihg
ton, Columbia & Augusta Railroad
was approaching the city and when
near the old .Union Depot, some color
ed b ys attempted to secure a ride by
climbing between the cars. One of
tnem, named James Bur.net. in tbe at
tempt to rde. missed his foothold and
felt, and one of the ear wheels passed
over bis teg crushing it badly. Fortu
nately the train was near-y at a stop
when the accident occurred or tbe boy
might have been drawo under tbe
wheels and crashed to death. The suf
ferer was taken to the City Hospital,
where amputation jost below the knee
was performed.

Death of Mr John C tleyer.

A large number ot our readers will
be pained to learn ol tbe death of Mr.
Joho C. Heyer. which occurred at
about 3 oViock yesterday afternoon.
He was stricken with paralysis for tbe
second time a tew days since and con
tinued to sink, with no prospect of re
covery, until tbe messenger came Mr
Heyer was born in Bremerhorn, Gerf
many, about 68 years ago. and came to
this.country wbeu 21 years ot age. aud
located first in Charleston. S. C , where
the was engaged in mercantile pursuits
lor about five year, when be came to
Wilmington where he at once renewed
his tTci-upalion and where he remained
in active business life until about two
years ago. ProbsJly no merchant who
baa conducted business in litis oily for
tbe longth of time in whicii Mr. Heyer
has ben engaged is more widely and
favorably known throughout the State
and in a large porliou of South Caro
lina, than be. Plaiu and sometimes
apparently rough in speech and ina.i
uer. yet no man had a kindlier heart,
aud his generous baud was oflen open
ed for the relief otlhe pr and unltr
tunate.. In business transaction hi
integrity was never doubled. His wile,
whom he married in what was then
New Hanover county but now a part
of Peuder. and five children three
sons and two daughters survive him.
