Carolina Revenue Act is printed and

information of parties who are requir
ed to. tako out licenses thereunder in
North Carolina:
Sec. 23. Every porsou. a citizen ol
the United States, authorized to do
business in this State, who as principal
or agent, peddles drugs, nostrums,
medicines or goods, wares or merchan
dise of whatever name or description,
shall pay a license tax as follows, to
wit : Each peddler on foot twenty
five dollars for every county ; each
peddler with one horse or mule with
or without vehicle fifty dollars for
every county j'each peddler with two
or more horses or mules with or with
out yehicle seventy-five dollars for
every county ; every itinerant merchant
or dealer, whether as principal or
agent, who solicits orders by retail
with or without sample for goods in
original state or to be made into cioth
ing or otherwise shall be considered a
peddlar within the meaning, ot this
section and pay a tax -of lvvenlv.fi ve
dollars iu each county; every itinerant
salesman commonly known as "cheap
John merchants'1 who shall expose for
sale either on the street or in houses
rented temporarily lor that purpose,
goods, wares or merchandise either by
ascending or descending bids or other
wise shall pay a tax ot titty dollars in
ench county in which he shall carry on
such business, whether as principal or
agent for any other person Every
person mentioned in this section shall
apply in advance to the board of county
commissioners ot tb county in which
he proposes to peddle or sell for a
license and the board ot county com
missioners may issue the license upon
the payment of the tax to the sheriff,
which shall expire at tbe end of twelve
moatbs Irom its date. Provided, it
shall be discretionary with the board of
county commissioners- whether they
issue tbe license or not. The license
issued as herein provided shall not be
valid until it shall be .exhibited to and
countersigned by the clerk ol the board
of county commissioners, by whom a
perniauent record of all such licenses
shall be kept. Any person may sell
under this section, without payment of
lax as peddler, salt,' vegetables, cheat'
nuts, peanuts, fruit, or other pro
ducts ot the farm or dairy, oys
ters, fish, books or printed music:
Provided, this exemption shall
uoi apply to Iruit trees", grape
vines, ornamsntai shrubbery and
plants, dealers iu which shall pay a
tax of five dollars in e:i -h county they
may sell or solicit orders by retail, and
every such dt alcr paving a drummer s
tax shall be allowed to employ an un

growth without tax at his nursery. It
shall be the duty of every person re
ceiving a license under this section to
