C, as second -class matter. , Th annnal report of iho Union Pa 'j'flc Rnilvvay Jfuipany shows that while ihern was a considerable decrease n its through business in lb86 it was oa?e up by an incrfae uf 1 cal busi-r:t-s. Though the gross receipt of b'th th Uniri Pacific C nipny and f the Union Pacific system, of raJ show a gain, ihere was a falling off in net re ceipts irom 'ratHc. But. ut withsund- irg thi, ihere was such .increase oi revenue from investments and miscel laneous sources that the amount appli cable to dividend was more than 50 per cent, greater man the year before. At the game ti He there was a decrease f nearly $8 000,000 effected in the com pany's iiideijt riDfss, while $8,300,000 wa3 expended in now coustruc'ion and quipment. This is not a bad showing for a corp -ration that pleads for tender treatment by its chief creditor, the Government of the United States. It is whispered that the purpose of the trustees of Plymouth Church in in viting the Rev. Joseph Parker of Lon Jorr, to preach a memorial sermon in Mr. Beecher's pulpit on Juno 24, the anniversarv of the nastor s birthday, is to induce him to take the place perma nently. In tbo meantime the congrega gation is steadily growing less, and the lealcr8 of the church seem to be drifting about without hope of restor- nz its former prestige. It is announced that Mr. Beecher's library and paint ings are to bo sold at auction He had about 10 000 volumes, touching every topic within the range of thought. Too' not large it wa a complete one. Nat urally. religious and philosophica vorks form the chief part. Mr Beech ?r was aUo the possessor of a valuable il?i:tin of etchings, about 1.1)00 in tumber. and fully as many engravings He was at one time an industrious col lector of precious siones, and theso treasures are also to go under the ham raer. The sale will probably occur in the fall. Thoehe. the labor candidate In the Covinirton. Kv .. district at the last Congressional election, created no sen sation in Washington by his announce ment that be ha concluded to with draw his contes of the seat of Speaker Carlisle. Mr. Carlisle never attached the least importance to the contest, al though, as was entirely proper.-he bad prepared himself to answer the allega tions set forth by the contestant There probably never was in the history of contested elections a claim made which haif so little basis to nst upon, and it 1 Mr. I hoebe had elected to con'est to the point of submission to a vote of the House, it is uot doubted that a unani mous verdict would have been rendered in fayor of Mr. Carlisle. The position had been taken by some that it wouid not be expedient to re-elect Mr. Car lisle. Speaker of the House, while his right to a seat was undetermined, but the withdrawal of the contestant dis poses effectually of any such question as tht. " Preparations have begun in Mexico for the coronation of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which will take place next December. The coronation is greatly desired by the Catholics of Mexico, and nothing will be left undone to add to the grandeui and impressiveness of the ceremony. Authority tor this act was granted by the Holy See in the year 1740. but was not carried out at that time on account of the condition o the country, and the project was subse quently abandoned. Last year the subject was again agitated, whtn the Archbishops of Mexico, Michoacan and Guadalajara addressed a communica tion to the Pope asking his. permission for and blessing on the coronation. On March 12 a reply was received from the Vatican, in which the necessary permission is granted, and December next set for the interesting ceremony. The three Archbishops have published the correspondence, from which it ap pears that one of the objects in select ing this year for the coronation was to celebrate the fiftieth year of Pope Leo's first mass. mm mm- Astouisliiug" Success. .
