Creos lel timb r will not decav from heat and moiitara vtha teredo worm, which is so destructive to ordinary pilings and other timber stib merged in salt wkter. will not loach if't and it i almost indestructible by fire, a we f-hall presently show. The cm pany have large orders, which are con tinually on iho increase, for pilings lor wharves and lor orossties for railroads, and these come from nearly every sec tion ol the country. Yesterday they made tb" first shipment, on an order tor 500,000 feet of creosoted crosHiesi for a cable street railroad in Cincinnati, Ohio. A short time since they shipped a large lot to the Dock Commissioners of New York City. Thev creosote croastins lor the Carolina Central, WiL mingtoH & Weidon. Wilmington, Co lumbia & Augusta, Raleigh & Augusta Air Line and other railroads. They also shipped yesterday a lot of window "ills lor a t bacco factory at Petersburg. Vtt.. and have recently shipped a lot of test telegraph poles to New rork. and if these prove satisfactory, large orders wiil be received for lhat sort of materi al. Two weeks ago they shipped fi5 000. leet of creosoted lumber for conduit tubes for telegraph wires at Boston, Mass. Aside from tho works iu this city this company, a re now erecting similar works, to operate under the same pat ents, at Fernandina, Fia , under the name of the ''Creosote Lumber & Construction Company " These will be completed and ready for operation by the 1st ol August next, aad will have a capacity of 50 000 feet (board rueas are) per day. Connected with this latter enterprise is an incident which shows h- w the indus try grows in favor as the value and importance ot the work is demonstrated- Mr. IR. T. Buchardi, an eminent German engineer and for some years Chief Engineer of the "Plant system" of railroads in Georgia and Florida, came to Wilmington to inspect the wori and judge of its pos sibilities for usefulness. He was en tirely skeptical of, the morits of the work before examination, and did not hesitate to express himself freoly in the matter, giving the opinion that as a preservative ot wood the process would prove valueless. He remained, how ever, two or three days and made a rigidly thoiougb investigation of the process and became so entirely convinc ed of its practical and incalculable use fulness, and became so deeply interested in the industry that he sougHt and ob tained a financial interest tn the Cora' pany. and is now in charge of the works which are being erected at Fernandina. having resigned his position in the "Piant systjru" for lhat purpose. rhat creosoted lumber is entirely proof against attacks from the Lor do worm has ben abundantly proven in 1 - A every instance wnere it r;as oeen use 1. In several places it bas been used at the bath houses on the Sounds, and while other woods have rotted -and gone to complete ruin, the creosoted timber re- maius as solid aad free trom the least sign of decay as it did on the day that it left the works, notwithstanding the fact that some of it has been there tour and even five years. Some of the creo-: sotcd timber hts been in use four years in Charleston harbor, where the loredo worm abounds and is extremely de structive, and it has not been touched, but is as solid and sound as when first placed there. There are numerous oth. er instances to establish, the fact that creosoted timber will not decay from the combined effects of heal, moisture and exposure to the atmospheric influ ences. and that the dreaded loredo will not attack it ; but those named are suffi cient. Gen. Robert Ransom, an undisputed and excellent ' authority, says that creosoted timber is indestructible by fire, and to establish bis position, he quotes the instance of the destruction by fire of the warehouse of the Atlantic & North Carolina Railroad, at More head City," in November last. The warehouse was over the water and rested upon iron pilings and was so situated that the largest vessels coold "coma alongside and discharge or take :in cargo. Quiu a number of cieosoted I pWlng had been' placed "in position as ' feni,er ,or lbo - v9elias they were I n,,Mre4J 10 ssharl. and woeo lbe I building, which was stored with cotton: was burned, with al! its content, and the iron pilinrs wern warped and bent by the intense beat, the creosAtsd tim ber remained intact and was hardly scorched. ' " '' This industry. which involves much capital and labor 6otb important factors in the city prosperity, and wealth - in not aloie fur the benefit ot owners of railroads and wharf property. U n J act hese are the places where its VUU9' ueslU,, lu u- ,ore8 01 the State, where the timber must be secured ; and. here is where its great value to other interests is unmistake bly shown. The con. pany ha an authorized cap ital .f $400.CO. of which $100,000 has been paid in.
