Il" is said that Queen Kapiolani's mission to Rngland is to raise money for her impecunious husband Kalakua wants to borrow $2,000 000. and has thus far been unable to accomplish his purpose.- As a last resort be plays bis Queen Whether English capitalists will recognize the strongth of the card or not is a, matter ol conjecture. There is no truth in the reports of Vlr. Parnelrn health being enously i impaired. They poison her, and then the authors daring ly follow her into another sphere aud bring her back; as a saintly evangel of Christianity. We have before us a neat voljme en titled "The North Carolina Speaker." compiled byMesrs. E G Harrell and J. B Neathory. editors of tb North Car' o ind Teacher, and published by Messrs. Alfred Williams & Co . of Raleigh, it is made up entirely of articles in prose and verte from the pen of North Caro linians, so no of which are very good, and some are well, not quite so good The motive is good, however, and suc ceeding issues may oorrect some errors of judgment in this. For instance, full justice has uot been done to the poetical writers oflhis State. We will mention a few such as Hon. A. & Waddell. q! tbjs city, Mr. Chester A. Rockwell, of Whiteyille. Mr. W. C Downing, of Mackey's Ferry, and Mrs. U. A. Watts and tbe late N. P. Clingman. of Golds bo ro Some really exquiate gems ol poetry are from tbe peas of these writers. And then Mrs. Mary Bayard Clarke's "Wood Notes ot North Caro. lina Poetry" gives the productions ot our versifiers of the ante-bellum days. Tha best of lhese could have been had without enlarging the size of the work, bve iiminating some of the articles Which do appear and which really would not have been missed trom its pages. There is Also one other thing to which we wish to allude, and that is the alto gether unjustifiable "adaptation" o Judge Gaston's famous 01d North State." It has been sung all over North Carolina for two generations just as its distinguished author saw fit to write it and it is rather late in the day for a re vision of bis thoughts, as well as his language. Judge Gaston wrote as the fifth stanza; . And her daughters, tbe Queen of tbe Forest resembling So graceful, so constant.. to gtntlest breath trembling. And trus light wood at heart, let the . match be applied them. How they. kindle inflame, oh! none know but who've tried them ! And the "adapters1' have- made it appear as follows : And her "daughters, tbe queen of our forest resembling. So graceful, so constant, to gentlest breath trembling. So true at their hearts when the test is applied them. How blessed each day as we spend it beside them! Tbeir Busiueas Buoming Probably no one thing has caused such a general revival of trade at W H. Green $ Co's. I)ru.g Store as their giving away to their customers of so many tree trial bottles of Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption. Tbeir trade is simply enormous iu this very valuable article from tbe fact that ii alwajs cures and neer disappoints. Coughs. Olds.
