We saw three badgeless dogs to geiher at the corner of Chestnut and Eighth streets, at about sunset last night. There are a good many piles of trash in the streets in the Eastern section of the city which should be removed at once. The lucky ones yesterday were those who stayed home. Mrs. Alice L Adkina has opened a new boarding house at 2044 South Front street, near Orange. wh re boarders can be KCCnmmodated by the day, week or month. See adv. in thU issue. Knights ol' Honor. Carolina Lodge No. 43L Regular meeting this (Monday) evening, at 8 o'clock. Full attendance is desired. femouai Messrs. P. Heinsberger and W. W. Hodges, who have been spending a tew days at the Rocks, returned to tbejity this morning. They report good fishing and lots of luck. Lutrge Party. The excursion of colored people to Wiisoh, on lhe Wilmington & Weldon Railroad, this morning, was probably th largest that ever left this city. There were fifteen passenger coaches and two baggage cars, crowded lo their utmost capacity, and there were quite a num ber of people who desired to go, but who could not be accommodated. It was indeed a monster excursion. Mozart Hall. Workmen were engaged this Loom ing iu removing the remainder of the block letters, which once constituted tb letrend. "Mozart Hall.' over Messrs. Burr & Bailoy's store. By the force" of storms and the ravages of time, a large portion of the letters had been destroy ed.so that fragments only remained, and as other improvements lo the front of the building are in progress; it be came necessary to remove these latter. To-Morrow -Night. The ladies hope for aiarge attendance at the Lawn Party to-morrow night, for the benefit pf the Wilmington Light In tantry flag fund. They hope to have some good music on the occasion, as the Cornet Concert Club have been asked to play for tbem. There will be a plenty of cooling refreshments and a number ot fancy articles will be offered for sale, at really very low prices. The Lawn Party is the only public amuse ment or entertainment announced for this week. Base Ball. On Saturday afternoon the third and last game of base ball of the series, be tween the Charlotte and Wilmington nines, was played at the Seaside grounds, resulting in a victory fot the former by a score of 9 to 6. The game was hotly contested on both sides and the prospect for a favorable result for the home team was good, as the score stood 6 lor the home team to 5 lor the Charlottes at the beginning of the ninth inning. The latter then went to the bat and scored fojr runs, while the home team made nothing when they took' the willow. Our boys played rwell; until the game was nearly finish ed, when they failed in several m stances, thus losing the game. City Court. Thomas Gordon was brought before the MayT th'i morning to' auswer to the charge of disorderly conduct. The testimony showed lhat it was one of those shameful cases of domestic infe licity in which the wife used the broom stick and the husband did the best he ooul ! to defend himself in an entirely playful manner with bis fists. The fun proved very annoying to the neighbors. and as such occurrences ore frequent, a tine ot $20 was imposed, with the al. ternative of 30 days in the city prison. Ingenious Work. Mr. James H- Hewett killed a rattle snake, on the 1st inst., at his farm on Jumping Run, about li miles from the city. His suaieship was 54 ieet long and had 13 rattles and. a button Mr Hewett skinned the reptile and bad the bide tanned and afterwards varnished, and has had it fitted up with springs in such a mauuer tha it now closely re sembles the original, and can be made to run and shake the rattles as it did in life. It is an ingenious piece of work, bat we are not fond enough of nakes to wish for such a vicious-look" tng play thing " lleroe and Eloroiues. 1 here ar few uo endure bodily troubles without complaint. Much has been said regarding this popular resort ton the people of W:t mington and vicinity, and as time pro gresses and the place becomes built up with pretty cottages aud improved and beautified by the taste of the prop erty owners there, much will remain to Ims said in its-praise The situation of the village wbich has sprung up on the yerge of the Sound within a compara tively few years is attractive and picturesque. The tasw-fu. and cozy ((Hiking cUftgeSi embowered amid in viting groves and- shaded by beautiful f diage. with the deep diapasen of the never ceasing anthem of the ocean to be heard from the distance, seem to re mind ore of some fairy spot, where the dwellers are exempt from all the cares of life. We visited the place for the first time a day or two since, and were deeply impressed with its natural beauty as well as with lhe tasteful Improvements which were visible on every band. The day was too torridly and horribly hot for us to fee all the loveliness of the place by a stroll through the precinct, but we saw enough ,to cause us to sigh for a forluue that we might make it a suburban residence. But there are splendid accommodations for transient visitors, who wished to spend a day removed from the dust, turmoil and hot brick walls of lhe city. Piney Grove Hotel, of which our genial friend, Capt. E. W. Manning, is pro prietor, has ample accommodations for a large number of guests. It is right on the margin vt the Sound, in full view ot the ocean, and is a cool and delight ful retreat whenever there is any breeze to tan the parched and fevered brow. The cuisineis superb and the rooms are large, airy and well ventilated. There are also several bath houses con nected with the establishment aud a large club house, where visitors who do not like to remain-in their rooms may sit and epjoy the cooling breezes as tbey are wafted across the sound from the ocean. Messrs. Stokely Brothers also keep a good hotel there. The drive to the Sound, over the turnpike, is delightful. The roadway, after leaving Market street, is one of the best in the State, and in fact, we doubt if it can be equalled. It is as solid as any Macadamized road of the North, is so nearly level that the slight undulations serve to break monotony, and is a perfect road, only lacking in width. It should be at least four feet wider. This, in brief, is our view of Wrigbtsville and the means of getting there. Criminal Court. New Hanover County Criminaj Court, Judge O. P. Meares presidihg. and Solicitor B. R.- Moore appearing in behalf of the State, convened at the Court House in this city this forenoon. The morning hour was devoted mainly to empanelling the grand jury and to delivering the cuslomarycharge to the same. The following are the grand jury for the term: E. P. Bailey, foreman: Thomas J. Rand. V. W. Chadwick, J Carmer Davis. M F. Croom, B. F. Swann. Benjamin Scott, 1). J. George, J.T. Mclver, George B. Myers, W. S. Walker, John W. Owen.
