The report that Secretary Lamar has
requested that al! bureau officers shall
bring in their reports much earlier than
usual this year, by the middle of Sep
tember, if possible, has renewed the
talk that he is to be appointed to the
Supreme Bench, and that he wishes to
prepare h:s annual report as early as
possible in order that, if it shall, be
deemed necessary, he may take his seat
upon the Bench at the October term.
The fact that Secretary Lamar will go
upon the Bench being generally con
ceded. Secretary Muldow's name is
frequently mentioned as his successor.
In the interior department his appoint
niont would cause great pleasure. His
qualifications, the fact that he would
be recommended by Secretary Lamar,
his executive ability, which has con
tributed so largely to the suceo s of Mr.
Lamar's administration, and his asso
ciation with the reforms instituted in
the department are quoted in his favor.
Should he be appointed the policy t 1
the department would not be changed.
Senator Pugh, of Alabama, conced"

for the selection of the second man on
the ticket In his opinion the Vice
Presidential nominee should come

bad politics to put a weak man on the
ticket with Cleveland, whoseonly quaU
ilicatiou is that ho was a soldier twenty
odd yoars ago. He docs not fear the
uomiuatiou by the -Republicans ot
cither Blaiue or Sherman, since ho bc
licves t.hey would antagonize each
other to the bitter end rather than one
should bo successful over the other. He
considers a ticket composed of Senators
Allison and Hawley probably the most
dangerous one for the Democracy, al
though Allison's views on finance
might not bo acceptable to the New

All the prominent Irishmen ot New
Yoik deny any knowledge of Mooney,
the man who tried to dostroy the
steamer Queen. Mooney's effects were
found in a zinc covered, oak-b iund
trunk and two valises, all carefully
packed as though the man had made
preparations for a hasty departure. In
the trunk were found two pieces of gas
pipe, packages of powder, sulphur,
phosphorous, crystals ot chloride of po
tassium. several glass tubes and some
blasting caps for Atlas powder, besides
clothes and noto-books. There was a
picture of Dr. McGlynn and a few per
sonal letters. The pipes were of heavv
brass, ot unequal lengths and at about
one-third of the distance' from one end
ot each was acock, which the police
did not attempt to turn. The shank of
the cock' was made of a soft metal that
could be eaten away by acid placed in
the smaller chamber and thus explode
the contents of tho larger. Capt. Gast-
lin. who made the examination, re
marked: "Mooney was ready to blow
up a fleet." Capt. Gastlin found good
reason to believe that Mooney is the
man who blew up the Old Dominion
line steamship Gayandotte with a dyn
amite bomb on January 31. during the
coal handlers' strike, and perhaps the
man who tried to burn the Pennsyl
vania Railroad ferry boats Chicago and
New Tork andlhe Morgan line steam'"
