The Democrats in Kentucky did not
lose so much in the legislature as the
falling off ot their majority on lh State
ticket would indicate. In the Jast Leg
isiaturp the Democrats had 35 members
of th- Senate and i meaiberc of the
House. In the Legislature of 1887 they
will have, accofrding to the Iouisvillo
Courier Journal reports. 31 mernber
of the Senate and 70 members "ot the
s
House, a loss of 13 on join' ballot.
The Republicans bad in the last Legis
lature 3 members in the Senate and 20
in the House. In the next legislature
the Democratic figures give the Repub
licans 7 members of tha Senate and 26
members of the House, a gain often on
joint ballot. The returns on the State
ticket have not yet been made public.
The Democrats are in no hnrry.
Dr. A C. Robinson, of St Lui.
thinks the American custom nfning to
European spas and sanitariums in
search ot health is reprehensible. There
are more and belter mineral springs in
any one of the United States than can
be found in all Germany. A fevv year
-go a well known grain operator,
broken down in health, went to Carls
bad. He sought the advice ot the most
eminent physician at the cure1, who.
after a slight examination, asked the
patient where he was from "I live in
St. Ljouis, Missouri,'' wasH the reply.
' Ah. yes,. Said .the old doctor, "you
live, then, but a short distance trom
the great Hot Springs ot Arkansas, the
grandest health resort fn the -world. I
would advise you to go back al once to
America and try the Hot Springs. Ca Is-
bad is not tor you." The patient came
home, went down lo Hot Springs for a
tuouth, and came back as good a man
as when be was 21 years of age.
t Hon, Frauk Hard, ot Ohio is very
decided and pronounced in his opinion
as regards the next campaign. He was
interviewed at St. Paul. Minn., by a
correspoudeut of the New York Herald
ad the result is uublished in that paper.
Mr. Hurd said :
"In my opiuion the next. National
Denrocrjaiio Con Yentiori'wilk find it in
cumbent upon itself to adopt the planks
id the Ohio Democracy in regard to the
form of tho existing tariff laws; and
this will be the solo issue .between the
two parties as far as our-standard
bearer is couccrned. Undoubtedly it
will be Cleveland, for under no cir
cumstances will 'Governor Hill. - of
New York, be opposed to him. There
is an understanding between both ot
tbem to this effect, and the e is no op
position in any quarter now. It has
been my observation that a man who
is weak with the politicians is univer
sally stroug with the people, and the
efforts made by the incumbent of the
White House in the direction of an
houest administration of affairs have
not beeu in vain.
"Ii makes no difference who is nom
in a ted by the Republicans Blaine,
Sherman, Depew, Sheridan or any of
the others whose names have beeu
mentioned in coa'Qcction.rjvith- the
Presidency Cleveland will defeat any
candidate in opposition to him.
"Considerable stress has been laid
upon the strength of Blaine as regards
the Irish vole, but bo is not so strong
with this element as he was two years
ago; and, besides, means will be taken
to thwart the Republicans that were
not considered necessary in the. last
election. Now that we know where
the element of strength is supposed to
be, we will devote our energies to weak
ening it. and with good grounds for sue
cessful issue.
"As far as Senator Sherman is con
cerned he has no positive strength, al
though it is claimed for him that he
would be backed by the financial men
ot the country.
During my recent visit to New
York I talked with a number of busi
ness men who are Republicans, and
from the tenor ot their remarks Ishould
say that nlne-tenths-of them would sup
port Cleveland at the polls, and princi
pally because there has been no serious
interruption n the business ot the coon
try si nee-the adtent-of the new admin
istration." - r
