I read in "Iber Times a few days affo.V.said a member of the Reading (Pa ), bar uo a visit to this city, "an account of a man in western Pennsyl vania. who died the father of thirty three children, at the age of 'JO years. When "John HefTner. of Reading, was I accidentally killed by the cars in that ciry tin 1885. fit tbagc of ('.) vars, he was theJ father "of foctyone children, and a step child also called him lather, lit finer was one of Reading V char acters, and was in full visor ot health when he was killed It is doubtful il his record in the paternal line was ever equaled. HefTner was a dwarfed hunchback. Ilewas born in Berlin in 1816 and came to this rountry in 1813. settling in Reading, Until his death he ruade'a liyiitg by collecting and selling rags and pnper Mis remarkable tauiily history is part of thc records of the Berks county courts, it having been elicited a short time before bis death while he was a witness in a lawsuit lie was married first in 1810 In eiuht years bis wife bore him seventeen children. The first and second years of their marriage she gave birth to twins For. lour successive year alter ward she bore triplets In the sevcuth year she gave bi. th to one child, and died soon afterward: Of the seventeen children she lett, consequently, the eldest was only 7 vears of age. . HefTner engaged a young woman to look alter bis large brood of babies, and three months later she became thu second Mrs. Heffner. She presented her hus band with two children the first two ears. Five years later she had added ten more to the' family, two at every birth. Then for throe years she added b it one a year. She died before another year came round. Of the thirty two children that John Iltfloer 'had been presented with twelve had died. The twenty that were left, however, did not appear to be any obstacle to a young widow with One child consenting to become the third wife of the jolly little humpback for he was known as one of the happiest and most genial men in Reading, although it kept- him toiling like a slave to keep his score of mouths in bread. -The third Mrs. Heffner be came the mother of nine children to her husband in ten years, and the content ment and happiness of the couple were proverbial. One day in the Fall of 1885 the Father of the forty one children was crossing the Reading track and was run down by a locomotive and killed. But lor that sad ending of his life it is iru possible to estimate what the size ot this little peddler's family would even tually have been. His widow and a large number of his children I believe Ibere are twenty eight of the forty-two still living livo in Keading. l liey are all thrilty and respectable people." N. Y Times. Advice Mrs. Wikslow's Soothing Sykup should always be used when-children are cutting teeth. It relieves the little sufferer at once; it produces natural, quiet sleep by relieving the child irora pain, and the Jittle. cherub awasres as " bright as a button.r' It is very pleas ant to taste. It soothes the child, solt ens the etima, allays all pain, relieve wind, regulates the hnwels, and is the be.t known remedy for diarrhoea, whether risins from teething or other Huses.
