We are giad to hear that Mr. George F Herbert, who has been so seriously ill. is reported as improving. Mr. D. Branch, the efficient ticket agent for the Atlantic Coast Line, re turned to the city last night, after spending a week very pleasantly in New York. Asheville Cilizm: We had the pleasure yesterday of meeting Mr. Mike Cronly and his son, Mike Cronly. Jr.. of Wilmington. Mr Cnmly, along time friend, is one of the foremost bus iness men of his city, and has done as mueh for its advancement as any of his fellow citizens, and has a degree ol siiiacity as to the needs of the city in relation to the extension of its business which may ultimately bear its long de furred fruits. A Bijr FrKiiet. There is a big freshet in the river, pouring on its way down to this city. Capt. Tomlinson. of the Cape Fear, had a telegram this morning froro Fay ettevilie which said that the river had I risen 40 feet at that plac3 but that it was now falling rapidly. It is almost curtain that there will be a heavy loss to the farmers along the line of the river. Some of the finest com lands in the State are the bottom lauds along the Cpe Fear. These are inundated every Wmte by the fl od which come down from the interior of the Slate bringing with them rich deposits of mud. which are left on the. lowlands when the overflow passes off. Hence, some magnificent crops ot coru are made there acd the yield is sometimes enormous It has been several years since the lands have been inundated during the crop season bat we fear .hat the water is over them uow. In cases ot this kind the only way is to cut the corn down and cart it off to the high ground and make tho best they can of it there. Paints apd Varnish. M Liebeck, charged with larceny, was sent on the Criminal Court and in default ol 100 bond was committed to jiii. John Nobody, d and d.. was next arraigned. Ho was find $20 or 30 days. The same, for resisting an c fficer. Judgment suspended for the present. AH Serene Now. There have been very heavy rains in the interior, the report of which will be found in clippings from Che News and Observer in our Sta'e news column to day. In addition to these there were also heavy rains on Saturday 00 the Carolina Central R. R. There was no train between Raleigh and Hamlet, on Saturday night, because ol the washouts but there was nothing more than a slight, detention on the C. C. R. R. The damages on the R. & A. A. L turned out to be slighter than they at first appeared to be. They have all been repaired and trains will run as usual to night. Poiut Caswell Items. A friend at Moore's Creek sends us a few interesting items from that locality. He says: We have fine crops in this section and there is no discount on that fact. The farmers are now up to their eyes in fodder pulling, and they will soon have it all stacked. The business of the water miHs in this section (not the watermillions) was nearly all broke up in this section by the late heavy rains, which also left the roads in a very bad condition. Our veneraole friend, Mr. Owen Alderman, has arrived home sate and sound from his extended visit to South Carolina. He is in fine health and has gained 10, pounds in weight and is well pleased with his trip. Mrs. Gporge Alderman, who left Wilmington a good many years ago. is now on a visit to her many relatives and friends. She expects to return to ber home in Texas some time in Sep tember. . There will be preaching on Sunday at Moore's Creek Baptist Church by Rev. W. M. Kennedy. Who was He? The Charlotte Chronicle has an ac count ot the murder of a young man by the name ot Thomas Brown (wheth er white or colored is not stated) who is said to hail from this city. It is as follows: We yesterday published a brief ac count of a murder on the C C. & C. road, about 5 miles from Rock Hill, and from additional particulars receiv ed yesterday it seems thatlhv name of the man killed was Thomas Brown, and no was slain by section boss D. B. Deal- Brown was from Wilmington, lie oecaiue involved in a quarrel with Deal about sr.me w.rk and Deal order ed him to leave the place. Tho two men abused each other for. some time. Brown picked up a roek and Deal or dered him to drop it. He dropped the rock, whereupon, it is claimed. Deal ruhed upon hiro and s:abbd him. in the back. After beine stabbed he ran a short distance down the railroad track and tell dead.
