T oct ib d&w lv tenrm 4thi Greensboro Workman: A revival meeting, at Alaojance church, whir'h beean on Saturday. 20th. aad closed on Sanday. -28th. resu! ed in the conversion nf Kriif. OH nprsnns. Charlotte Chronicle: Mr. James Me Leod died at the residence of his son Mr.R. M. Mclod, two miles east of Matthews Station, at 8.30 o'clock yes terday morning. The deceased gentle man was about 80 years of aee. and was a brother to Major M. I). L Mc Leod. of Charlotte 0 Snow Hill Enterprise: The protract ed meeting, conducu-d by Rev. E. J. Harper, in the M. E. church ot this place, came to a close on Thursday evening, 25th inst. The results of the meeting are without precedent in this town, there being about (8 professions. 55 of whom joined the M. E church. Tarboro Southerner: Mr H. I). Tee I says the following is true to the letter; Riding in I he country the other dav. he saw a large black snake coiled around a large oak tree thre? or tour time-;. Pistol practice becan and the snke was accidentally killed The body ot tne snake in several places bulged u so that the curiosity ot Mr feet was excited so he cut it open and found four grown rabbits which the reptile j had recently swallowed. Goldsboro ArtjUS- The water is very high in both Neuse and Little Rivers; higher lhau it ha3 been in eighteen years, so those say who remember to have observed the treshet of 1870 However, we are glad to be able to state that thus tar but little damage has been done, we believe, to crops. This 13 attributed to the worfc of the govern ment in baviug these streams cleaned oat. The water runs off more rapidly now and is less subject to overilow. Raleigh News and Observer : Colored citizens of Newbern have applied to the Governor for permission to organize a military company. Citizens of Salis bury bavr also applied for permission to organize an artillery company. There are now one hundred and eleven telephones in use in the Raleigh ex change. This number is greater by ten per cent than in the exchange ot ooy other city of the same size of Kaleigh south or east of the Ohio riyer. Shelby New ra: Mr. J. Duvinney Putnam, a farmer living on the Spang ler place near Shelby, attempted to commit suicide last Thursday by Ira ris ing. Mr. Putnam had tu?d a rope around his necK and was putting it over a joist in a room in his dwHliiiu. when some neighbors, alarmed by the screams of hia children, who wen in the same room, ran in and prevented -him from taking his life. Mr. Putnam has been very despondent lately on ac count ot some family troubles and this, it is thought, had affected his mind and caused him to attempt the rash deed. Chatham Record : In illustration ot the low valuation of property in this county, wo would mention that, accord ing to the last returns of the list takers, there were more horses in Albright township th3ii in any other and yet there were only seven horses in that township thai were valued as hiirh as $100 apiece ' On last Friday after noon some colored people were return ing to thi3 place from a church meeting at Mitchell's chapel, and. when about two miles from here, they silw a hawk llnttoring in the road. On' approach ing nearer they were surprised to ee a black snake coiled around the hawk's neck, struggling to escape. Thev killed both tho snake and hawk, which was a large bluo tail chicken hawk Weldon News: The vineyard of C. W. Garrett & Co.. at Ringwood. is the largest io the State. He purchased tho farm in 1863 which has been for a long time known as Welless' Vineyard, and by care and good management made it a most valuable property. Since his death in November last it has been excellently managed by Mr. H S. Har rison. The farm contains 65 acres in scappernng grapes and 20 in other varieties. Most excellent wines are made there, the product last year being 38.000 gallons. A larger quantity will be made this season. The cellar con tains between 50.000 and 60.000 gallons of wine and aboct 2,000 gallons ot brandy. These have a splendid sale throughout this country and quantities are shipped to foreign countries every year. Durham Recorder: The wages of laborers in the cigarette factories of Durham a verage, everything a9 a basis. $6 per week. In the smoking tobaefco factories $4 per week. In the snuff factory. $4 per weak. The two last Named employ chiefly colored labor. Tho making.packing and stamp ing of cigarctteiare done altogether by white employees. l he corn crop a failure, and the nog3 were killed or sold, and although the fall pigs are usually not much thought of. this year the farmers see in him a market tor their corn which because of its abund ance will be. low priced Hog raisin will be a good paying business, for some time, and it is one ol the way out of the difficulties that surround the farmers rhe malls eiose and arrive at the City Fost-c-HLca as follows : CLOSE. .
