All the departmenss of the city gov ernment were closed this forenoon, after 10 a. m , in respect to the memory of the late Capt. H. C. Brock, Chief of Police, whose funeral took place to day at Doyleatown. Pa. The through freight ou the W & W. R.R. which went up last Tuesday morn ing.carried48 cars, most of which were loaded wtth cotton. The Weldon News says that it was the longest freight train that ever arrived there. We have beeu assured, by a gentle mag who is posted on the subject, that the parties who are to build the street railway here are expected in the city n'ext month and that the work will probably be begjn soon after their arrival. John H Williamson, a noted colored orator, it is announced, will deliver an address in the City Court room on the evening of the 27th iust., in behalf of the Colored People's Industrial Fair, which meets in Raleigh the latter part of October. The farmers of Pender county turned out largely yesterday at Burgaw. A County Agricultural Society was or ganized and a fine spirit prevailed. Thomas J. Armstrong, Ej , was elect ed President of the Society. Mr. R. T. Williams, Vice President; Mr. Robt J. Durham. Secretary; Mr. R. W. C dins, Assistant Secretary. aud Mr. R. II. Murphy, Treasurer. An ex ecutive committee of nine was elected The S ciety is now in good working order and promises to prove of much benefit to the farmers ofPender county. It is just what they need. and. in fact, what they have long needed. Some of the best farming lands in the State are to be found in the borders of their pros gressive young county but it has long been felt that more improved methods of farming were needed. Capt. Jno. T Patrick, the indefati gable and energetic State Immigration Agent, was present at the meeting, as was also Col. John Robinson, Com missioner of Agriculturo.'and they both gave those present some earnest, prac tical talk Bro. Nicholson, ot the Clin ton Caucasian, who was also present, made an eloquent and telling spe ch. It was ordered by the Society that an official report of the proceedings of the meeting be sent to the Daily Review aud Wilmington Jouknal for pub lication and that the Maraud Messenger be requested to copy them. The Society adjourned to meet again on the 2nd of October. A Wilmington Boy. Yesterday we were sho'vn a picture of Prof. Hewlett (our Bob) and his wife, who are now travelling with Andrews & MitcbelPa show through the New England States. They are presented in the different characters they assume. Bob has made wonderful progress as a rope walker since he was last here. A Warning This morning, during the excitement that was caused by the alarm of fire Alex Butler, colored, was jammed be tween two hose reels as they turned to leave the wharf. He was tightly sqeez- ed but not hurt much. .This is a warn iog to others, to keep out of the way of the firemen and the fire machines. The fire department have the right of way in case of an alarm. City Court. The first case for His Honor's con sideration this morning was that of John aud'M ttie Fossett, charged with uoraejr'f conduct, ihey were both adjudged guilty and ordered to pay a fine ot $20 each or work on the streets lor 30 days. trTiena Pearsall, colored, was arraign ed for larcency. She made a statement before the Court, and His Honor de cided that she was more sinning than sinned against, and continued her case until to-morrow. Just that kind that people would like to be sub jected to nearly always. Thai is the kind that Miss Florence Bindley and her very fine company made tor a large audieoce last night at Metropolitan Hall. It to please an audience is what this company aims at, and being pleas ed is what an audience desires, then the Florence Bindiey Company is more than a success in one instance and the audience perfectly satisfied with the other. Miss Bindley is a little captiva tor captivates everything. She is a perfect little artiste in her role. She took the audience by storm last night. She made everybody smile from her first appearance and with her support kept the audience in paroxysms of laughter most of the time. Everybody augbed and cheered till they perspired. They couldn't help it. She was encor ed time and again. It seemed as if she was wanted on the stage all the time. jferttouai Mr. Thos. Oglesby, ot Maxton, is here on a brief visit. Smith and wife, who have been to Philadelphia to attend the Cen tennial, returned last night. Mr. G. J. Boney is again at his post. He has had a pleasant visit to the mountains of Western North Carolina. Mr. Jno. R. Turrentice and wife, who left here a week ago Tor a visit to the North and Northwest, returned last night. Mr. Isaac Bear, of the wholesale firm of Morris Bear & Bros., returned to the city last night from a visit to the Northern and Eastern markets. Prol. M. C. S. Noble, Principal of the Graded Schools 'u this city, returned last night, accompanied by Mrs. Noble, from a vi3it to relatives in Johnston county. Mr. and Mrs. John Taylor returned last night from an extended visit to the markets of Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York, where they purchased largely ot goods tor the Fall and Win ter trade. Mr Wm. Goodman, who has been spending a week in the Northern mar kets, returned last night. He states that the wholesale merchants say the trade bas been better this season than it has tor ten years past. ' -:. " t ; t A Little Local History. The brick residence on the corner ol North Front and Chestnut streets, re cently owned and occupied by Hon. R R. Bridgers. which is now being torn down to make room tor the now Fed la f . srai Duuatng, was erected in toe year 1845 by Mr. Wm. B Meares, the father of Hon. O. P. Meare3 In 1843 a brick residence stood on the same spot, and was occupied by Mr. Meares, but it was destroyed by the fire in that year, which started in the alley North of the First National Bank building and swept np to the depot.
