C. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBERS, '87. Entered at the Postoffice at Wilmington, N.C., as sccona-ciass maiier. In a letter read before a recent meeting of the Berlin Anthropologi cal Society, Dr. Schliemann ener geticaliy protests against the cur rent belief in the salutary effect of he Egyptian climate, in pulmonary troubles. He writes from Thebas: "Since my consumptive servant,' Polops, whom I had taken with me in order to save his life, has died, and wince I have observed m this city a number of consumptives whom, like the German Consular Agent Tedrous, I knew twenty-eight years ago as robust men, I am en tirely cured of the belief that Egypt is the paradise of consumptives, and I would much rather advise such patients to go to the Riviera than to Egypt.1' A Paris correspondent tells about the ne v handerchief s the ladies are carrying there. The Princess de Sagan's favorite handkerchief is bordered with a garland of scarlet pinks; flowers and leaves embroider ed in their natural colors. They are scented with the strong perfume extracted from the same flowers. The blonde Marquis de Grehfuble has all of her handkerchiefs em broidered with'the corn flower in all its variegated blue shades, and her perfume is sweet scented clover. Pink batiste, with white lilies of the valley worked on them, is the Duch est de Braganza's favorite handker chief. The Empress of Japan has ordered pale beige ones, worked with chrysanthemums of all- existing col ors. The widow's handkerchief is a pale lilac, worked with dark purple scarabees. The State of New Hampshire is having an unusual experience this year. Ordinarily its Legislature, which meets early in June, is through with its labors in about a month. Now it is well along in the fourth month of the session with no prospect of finishing at present. It is all owing to the railroad contest, over which the whole State is stir red up. An outside corporation, the Boston and Maine Railroad Com pany, is seeking to open the way for controlling the principal through line in the State, which the people apprehend will be fatal to competi tion. There is little doubt that if the representatives obeyed the will of their constituents the dreaded "monopoly" would not carry its bill tnrougn the legislature, out it is likely to go through. There have been charges of corruption, and though in the one case investigated they have not been sustained, there is 'evidently some power at work which is stronger with the Legisla ture than the will of the people, for that is distinctly against the Hazen bill. "If in a State so largely rural in its character as New Hampshire and with the 'popular' branch of the Legislature numbering over 300, a railroad corporation organized in another State can control legislation initson interest," says the New York JZVmes, "there is another strik ing evidence that your rural legisla tor has not that superior virtue sometimes attributed to him." The extent to which the leaders in the CJoniederacy have .passed away is only appreciated when the roll is called, as has been done by Col. C. C. Jones, Jr, of Augusta, Ga, in a recent address before the Confederate Survivors' Association. The Constitution of the Confederate States was signed by forty-nine dele gates, thirty-seven of whom are dead. The President survives, but Vice President Stephens died four years ago. Of three who held the portfolio of State in the Cabinet, all are dead; of five secretaries of war, all; of two secretaries of the treasury, one; of four attorney gen erals, two, and the one secretary of the navy; while the sole postmaster general, Mr. Reagan, is still very much alive, as he proved by taking: the stump for prohibition in the recent Texas canvass, and argxiin: against the declaration on the other side of his old chief. Of thirteen commissioners accredited to repre sent the Confederacy, abroad, -ten are dead. There were five men who bore rank as full generals in the arary, of whom Johnston and Bean regard alone survive; twenty-one lieutenant generals, of whom eleven are dead; one hundred major gen erals, of whom fifty-five - are dead; and four hundred and eighty briga dier generals, of whom CoL Jones thinks that considerably more than half are dead. Each year makes serious inroads upon the survivors, and it will not be so- very long be- iore me "Uonlederate brigadier," so dear to; Bourbon Republican organs and stump, upeakers, will be only a memory."- t An, Offensive- Breath. is most distressing not only to the 'person afflicted if he has any pride, but to those with whom he comes in contact.
