Steamboatmen report about 26 inches of water on the shoals in the Cape Fear, which is hardly depth enough for good and comfortable boating. It is undoubtedly a fact that our merchants are doing a much larger business at this time than they did at the corresponding date last year. It appears that this is true in all de partments of trade. Our stores are crowded with customers aud the salesmen are kept busy in display ing the fine array of seasonable go6ds with which their shelves and counters are stocked and in packing the parcels that have Ueen sold. One large clothing-dealer stated to us to-day that his average daily cash sales at this time were more than twice as much as they were at the corresponding time in 1886. City Court. Charles Nolan was the first case for the Mayor's consideration on Saturday night, for which he was required to pay a fine of $20 or work 30 days on the public streets. Chris. Cummings, a gallant sailor boy belonging on board the British steamship Bcnacrc, was drunk and disorderly at Front and Brunswick street Saturday night, for which he was required this morning to pay a fine of $10 or work 30 days on the public streets. This closed the docket for to-day., Cliief of Police Hall having donned his official harness was on hand to look out for those who had violated the city ordinances and to take and receipt for any fines which might be mulcted from defendants who might be convicted. In this connection it may be prop er to state, for the benefit of all con cerned, that Mayor Fowler is deter mined to break up all rowdyism and to suppress all noisy, profane or un seemly language on the public street and as a warning to others he will impose the. heaviest penalties per missable by lawr upon those who are convicted before him of being guilty of such offences.
