C- ; r -'' ' ' ". - ' ) ; " ' :, - '. Christian unity is a subject that is being discussed by some of the most eminent theologians of this country and it has been a matter of earnest prayer and conference in various deliberative bodies. Bv this is not meant tlie catnering to gether of all under one body and one temporal head, or the surrender of conscientious opinions and de nominational differences. Out a hearty cooperation of all for the furtherance of Christian views and the dissemination of Christian doc trines. The thought is a grand one, one of the grandest that this en lightened age has yet conceived and to our mind is little short of inspira tion. There is nothing incongruous in the .'thought, nothing that mili tates asramst the true soirit ot a genuine Christianity. All bodies of Christian people are fighting the' same light, in the same cause and against the same foe. The idea, as we understand it, is simply to em body these different forces, the infan try, the artillery, the cavalry, the naval forces, the reserves, alltuider one head and all under one leader ship, that of Him whose name is inscribed on every banner and on every shield and in whose name every battle is fought and every victory won. Heretof ose the warfare has been desultory, all calling upon the same name, all lighting in the same faith, yet without, unity or concert of action. The movement to this end seems to have assumed at last practical shape and form. A number of the most distinguish ed scholars and divines in the New World have - united in calling a I General Conference of all Evangeli cal Christians in the United States," to be held under the auspicious direc tion of the Evangelical Alliance and for the United States, in the city of Washington, December the 7th, 8th and Oth, 1887. The purpose of the Conference is announced, in an ad dress tltat has just been published by the promoters of the movement, to be the study and discussion of the following' important questions, re- latins to the welfare of the Church and State alike: 1st. What are the present perils and opportunities of the Christian Church and of the country? 2d. Can any of them be met best by a . hearty co-operation of all E vangelical Christians, which, with out detrimeut to aily denominational interests, will serve the welfare of the whole Church ? lid. What are the best means to secure such co-operation, and to waken the whole church to its re sponsibility ? The plan 7 of the campaign is thus outlined. The attitude and duty of the Christian Churches are thus plainly set forth: "The necessity of planting Chris tian institutions in the formative West, and of strengthening them in the older States, the duty of over taking the rapid growth of our cities with adequate Church pro visions, the importance of closing the widening chasm between the Church and the multitude, and of bringing the regenerating form of the Gospel to bear upon every character and life, demand the in stant attention of the Christian Church and the full exercise of all its energies. "We are now beginning to ap proximate European conditions of society. The existence of great cities, severe competition, an unem ployed class, increasing pauperism and crime, are the occasion and evidence of a wide-spread discon tent, for which the ballot affords no remedy. Has not the time come for us to make demonstration of the truth that the Gospel can do what popular suffrage cannot do t Is not this the nation, and is not this the generation, providentially called to make such application of the Gospel to the life of the people as has never yet been made ? Will not those who have en joyed t 'government of the people, by the people, and for the people,' be the first to learn that the essential evils of society are caused. not by misrule, but by sin, and that the Gospel, therefore, must furnish the solution of the great social pro blem? The Christian Church has not yet fujjy recognized its relations to the entire life ofthe community and the nation. Even Christian men, pre occupied with private concerns and overburdened by the demands on their time, are prone to neglect the public welfare, and are loath to ac cept any responsibility for existing evils, j "Denominations and local church es, each intent on its own good work, have fallen into a harmful competition instead of engaging in an intelligent and comprehensive co-operation. "Our marvellous material growth and the progress of 'invention have produced new conditions, to which business has been quick to adapt its methods. A teacher in a boys school in an adjoining county found forty big pupils out of sixty-three who had never read the Constitution of the United States, and were ignorant of the cause which led to its prepara tion. Every mother's son of -them, however, couid tell of the standing of each base ball club in the Na tional League and the American Association. Norr Her.
