Entered at the Postofflce at Wilmington, N.C., as second-class matter. The strange shiftings in schemes and suppositions characteristic of Afghan affairs are again illustrated. Not long ago it was the Ameer who was reported to be dangerously ill? and speculation was rife as to the result of his death, many believing that Ayoub Khan would take the opportunity to push his claims to the throne. But the Ameer still lives and has been beating his ene mies, while Ayoub has perished in the desert, probably from wounds received while trying to make his wav into Afghanistan to join the rebels. While this source of anxiety for the Ameer is removed, another simultaneously springs up in the entrance of a large number of Rus sian subjects into Herat in the guise ot merchants. The drawing of the Russian forces uearer to Herat, un der the late agreement with Eug land as to the boundary line, will no doubt be prolific in such alarms of Russian intrigues to gain possession of the city. Munkacsy's second picture with Christ for a subjectis now exhibited, where the first was for so long, at the Twenty-third street Tabernacle in N York city.- The "Christ on Calvary1" is a canvas 30 feet long and about 12 feet high, upon which the crucifixion is reJreserited at the ex treme right, and all the rest of the space is filled with a throng of peo ple leaving the mountain. The figure on the cross is described as 4 '.an unrelieved study of physical agony, witnout spiritual elevation: and the Tribune critic says of the work as a whole that it is "not a picture of the supreme tragedy, but a theatrical rendering of tin agitated mob." There is a much erreater variety and intensity of color used than in the Pretorium picture, and this produces a greater richness of eifect. The vigor of execution is as marked as before. But those who have seen the 1'Christ before Pilate" will not doubt that this is also far from a noble or a religious work, and is not unjustly characterized as a coarse meddling with sacred things. The anti-polygamy law passed at the last session of Congress annulled the charters of the Mormon Church corporation and the Mormon Immi- ration Society, and directed the attorney general to proceed against hese organizations in the Courts, and cause their affairs to be wound up "comformably to law." In obedience to the law, suits were be gun some weeks ago. The defend ants have filed answers to the bills of complaint. The church's answer denies every allegation of the Gov ernment. Its representatives assert that the church corporation, by law, ceased to exist on July 1,18C2, and that the church has since been a voluntary religious and charitable association. As for the propertv which the church is said to hold in excess of the $50,000 allowed by law, the respondents assert that it was, held for the church as a church, "and not as a corporation, by the late President Taylor, as sole trustee, until his death, and that he' disposed of all the personal property before his death. The real estate was deeded last April to three trustees William B. Preston, Robert T. Bur ton and John R. Winder appointed by the Probate Court, and all of it, except the parsonage lot, was ac quired before July 1, 1862. The of ficers of the Immigration Society ad mit that the society existed as a corporation when the law was en acted, but. say that it has never held any real estate, and now has no personal property except a few worthless promissory notes. They deny that Congress has constitu" tional power to repeal or annul their charter. . All reports seem to agree in mak ing out. an aggravated case of brutal British landlordism in Iowa, where evictions are said to be still in pro gress, carried on with all the at tendant suffering and cruelties prac ticed in Ireland. The land in ques tion is lacated in O'Brien county, and was a part of a tract granted by Congress in 1864 to the State of Iowa to be held in trust to aid in the con struction of certain railroads, among them the McGregor & Western and Sioux City & St Paul roads. The latter was never finished and so ne.yer acquired possession of the lands in the grant lying along its proposed route. The former road was built through O'Brien county, but never located the lands to which it was entitled by the grant. This road was finally absorbed by the St. Paul which has sold these lands .to an English sydicate, i that is now evicting settlers who went upon the land under the impression that it was public and open to settlement an impression created by the prom ists and correspondence of Secretary Teller, during the last Administra tion, with the land commissioner and Governor of Iowa. Most of the lands in the grant properly belong to the General Government and the settlers upen them, because neither the roads nor the State fulfilled the necessary conditions, . - "' - 7 "That Miss Jones is a nice looking girl, isn't she?" "Yes, and she'd be the 'belle of the town if it wasn't for one thing." "What's that?' ' "She has catarrh so bad it is un pleasant to be near her. She has tried a dozen things and nothing helps her. I am sorry, for I like her, lint that doesn't make it anv less disagreeable for one t'6 be around her." Now if she had used Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy, there would have been nothing of the kind said, for it will cure catarrh every time. '" OCTOBER ODDS. "Pa," said little Harold to his paternal parent after that indivi dual had been reading an article on "Superstition" to his family, "Pa, does death always follow the howl of a dog?" "No, darling," replied Backstruttle. "sometimes it is a bootjack." Jndy. A little three-year old girl, when her mother was trying to get her to sleep one summer evening, began to ask questions about a noise outside. When told that it was caused by a cricket, she wisely remarked ."Mam ma, I think it ought to be oiled." Exchange. "I wanted a roun' ticket for Scrap ville, Mister." "You have one, sir." "See 'ere, young man, ye may be smart enough to run a railroad, but ye can't ruii it into me that that 'ere squar' piece of paper's roun' al io win' I be 60 years old next Octo ber." Harpers Weekly. "Papa, raise the'blind, won't you," languidly requested Maud as the gro ing gloom settled over the ninety-seventh page of "Armand the Terrible." Papa was snoring mildly, but he managed to grunt: "On a queen high! D'ye take me for a chump?" and the tried spirit was again wafted into the glorious dreamland. Jilnghamton Hep. A little East Boston girl's mother, who had entertained her the other day with the enumeration of table delicacies, particularly mentioning quail on toast as one of, the most desirable of dishes, was surprised by the little one a day or t wo after when the child, in response to the query as to what she would like for dinner, promptly replied: "Oh, mamma, I want some whale on toast." Boston Budget. There is one admirable feature about the barbed wire fence and that is they can't paint Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup advertisement on it. , . Better once in Heaven than ten times at the gate. Brtholdi's Statue of "Liberty Enlight ening tlie .World" will be a reminder of personal liber ty for ages to come. On just as sure a foundation has Dr. Pierce's "Gold en Medical Discovery" been placed, and it will stand through the cycles of time as a monument to the physi cal emancipation of thousands, who by its use have been relieved from consumption, consumptive night sweats, bronchitis, coughs, spitting of blood, weak lungs, and other throat and lung affections. Seat yourself in your place, and they will not make you rise. Advice to Mothers. Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup should always be used when children are cutting teeth. It relieves the lit tle sufferer at once; it produces nat ural, quiet sleep by relieving the child from pain, and the little cher ub awakes as "bright as button." It is very pleasant to taste. It soothes the child, softens the gums, allays all pain, relieves wind, regulates the bowels, and is the best known reme dy for diarrhoea, whether arising from teething or other causes.
