The New York World has not
been a Democratic newspaper for
many long years. It- has been such
in name, but not in fact. It first
showed its true colors years ago
when it declared for mixed schools
in Richmond. It is now throwing
off a mask it seems that it no longer
needs. In a double-leaded editorial
article in its Wednesday's issue it re
joices in nominations made by the
Republicans. We venture the pre
diction that twelve months from to"
day it will be found supporting the
Republican nominee for President.
.Vale, vale, Mr. Pulitzer. In homely
anguage we will say: "We are glad
you are gone, and tnanK you tor
going." ;1 It is a Democratic gain and
a Republican loss.

engine. At least twenty-five hun
dred people witnessed the test, and
the visiting firemen were highly
complimented. They showed the
people here some things they had

was thrown over 200 feet horizon
tally, with 70 pounds steam pressure
and 160 pounds water pressure
With the same steam pressure and
120 pounds water pressure four
streams were thrown through sia-

A Great Actor.
Without a shadow of doubt Mr.
John S. Clarke, who will appear at
the Opera House here next Monday
night, is the greatest living comedi
an on the English speaking stage.
Although born in this country the
most of his professional career has
been passed in England, where he
has acheived his greatest triumphs.
He hasy however, appeared many
times in the large cities of the North
where his reputation as a comedian
is unassailable. Mr. Clarke is not to
be caugiit witn , any, or tne new
fangled trash,-which are advertised
as comedies, but sticks to the older
and more substantial as well as de
lightful comedies that can never
wear out. is also now one of the
largest owners of theatre property
in the world, being sole proprietor
of the Walnut street, Philadel
