Two items of show news come
from across the Atlantic One is
that in London a pack of trained
wolves are delighting the little folks
by doing tricks such as are taught
to performing dogs; the (other is that
in Paris a lot of cats are doing much
the same tricks at the winter circus.
The gold mines of, Australia con
tinue to be very productive. Some
of them are more than two thousand
feet in depth, and many will be
sunk even lower than that in the
near future. This is contrary to the
predictions of old mining experts,
who said many years ago that no
gold would ever be found in Australia
at a depth greater than a hundred
feet. '

It is reported irom Paris that M.
Henry "Buchet has found in the
National Idbrarv at Paris, on the
covers of a prayer-book, the like
nesses of King Charles VIII, of
France, and his Queen, Anne of
Bretagne. The covers are of mahog
any and must be among the earliest
specimens of that wood brought to
Europe. These, it is said, are the
only known likenesses of the royal
pair extent.

In China all the roads except the
imperial highways are tracks over
private land. The owner does all
he can to restrict them. When the
soil washes down into the road the
road is always deeper than the land
the owner digs out the road to get
back his soil with interest. This
makes the roads in the rainy season
successions of deep puddles, and
over all northern China traffic is
suspended for four or live months
every year on account of the imjass.
ability of the roads.
Col. Emerson, of Auburn, Me.,
has been giving an)account of a dog
that became famous during the war.
He belonged to a Portsmouth,
Maine, man who enlisted at the
beginning of the war and took the
dog with him. Both returned safely
at the end of three months; but as
the 10th Maine passed through
Portsmouth on its way to the front
some of the boys stole the dog and
took him with them. His owner
sent telegrams to Boston, New York
and Baltimore demanding his release,-
but the boys laughed and
kept the dog, who served two years
with them, and then went back to
Maine. Then the owner tried to get
him; but two of the 10th boys hid
him and carried him to Auburn,
where he re-enlisted with the 29th
Maine and again went to the front,
and was killed at Sabi n e Crossroad s.
He loved a battle and beeame terri
bly excited in action, barking and
gnawing at the earth where the bul
lets struck.

Magic and Ventriloquism.

company has met with success
whereever it has appeared, which is
not remarkable when we consider
the wonderful feats of legerdermain,
mind-reading and ventriloquism
which goes in part to make up the
entertainment. Aside -from the at

will be given away with every

good, and the artists were- well
trained and were gifted with musi
