TUESDAY, DECEMBER 20, '87. ; Entered at the Postoffice at Wilmington, N.C., as seconu-ciaiM mailer. TrfE KAUS IN COUNCII.. Jj;istSaturd;iy was abi Blaine day in New York. There were delegates present from all over the country and something called a "national league" was the outcome of the con ference. The "Man from Maine1 seemed to be the choice of the assem blage for defeat next year. The story of the war was told all over aain ami the venerableensanguined garment floated in the breeze. Of course Cleveland vt-as denounced and some feeble attempts were made to ridicule his masterly message. The resolutions adopted, in favor of a high tariff, draw the lines very distinctly between the two parties and it is as on this that the big fight will be made next year. Here are a preamble and resolution wnich were also adopted: UVmv.v, It is the opinion of this National Convention of Republican Club? that no man who at any time denounced Abraham Lincoln while he was President of the United Stales as a buffoon and clown; or who ever declared from his seat in the United States Senate that no man should denounce Jeff Davis as a traitor in his presence and go un rebuked by. him or who,' in Jiis offi cial capacity as Secretary of the Interior, ordered that the Hag of the United States should be displayed at half mast on the occasion of the death of Jacob Thompson; or who, as a Senator of the United States many years after the war, refused to vote that the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth amendments to the Con stitution are valid and binding, ought to be appointed to or hold the high office of Justice of the Su preme Court of the United Slates. "Resolved. That. L. Q. C. Lamar ought not to have been .appointed justice of said court.'1 The New York 7W6wicsays: "The directors of the Western Union Tele graph Company, at their meeting yesterday, declared a dividend of 1 per cent for the quarter ending December 1887. Recent dividends have been 1 per cent quarterly, and the increase in the rate was received with much satisfaction in Wall street. It has been rumored for a day or two that George J. Gould and one or two other directors were opposed to an increase at this time, but there was no diseussion at the meeting. The statement for the quarter with the recommendation of the executive committee was read, and the vote was unanimous in favor of the larger dividend. In the president's report it was said: 'The gross earnings will be the largest ever "earned in. one quarter, but little reduction in the expeuses of the Baltimore and Ohio system could probably be made be fore the 1st of December, and it will require a little further timeto realize the full benefits of the economies of the consolidation.' " The Chicago Times says: "Chica go Democrats are not worrying themselves about their National Convention. Their committee ap pointed by the State central com mittee has not done anything, and when it does no attempt will be made to influence the national com mittee by dining and wining. It is regarded .as a certainty that if New York wants the Convention, it can have it, just asChicagotook it away from Cincinnati on atest of strength between the Blaine and Shermari forces. 'It is all very well,1 said W. C. Gomlv, a member'of theuioni- -1 v mittee having the matter in charge, 'to let those who want to have a good time go to Washington and take the credit of bringing a Con vention here, but 1 am not a, believ er in it. I do not believe that Visit ing committees of thejsort influence the national committee either way. It is politics that brings a Conven tion to Chicago or some other city and nothing ese. It was the Blaine influence that brought, the Conven tion to Chicago as against Cincin nati, the choice of the Sherman fac- tion, and it will be so with the Dem ocratic Convention. If I could see one man I know I could very soon tell where our Convention Will be heldV1 Ion't let that cold of vours run on. You think it is a light thing. But it may run into catarrh. Or into pneumo nia. Or consumption. Catarrh is disgusting. Pneumo nia is dangerous. Consumption is death itself. The breathing apparatus must be kept healthy and clear of all obstruc tions and off ensive - matter. Other wise there is trouble ahead. , All the diseases of these parts, head, nose, throat, bronehical tubes and lungs, can be delightfully and entirely cured by the use of Bo scheeV German Syrup.
