There are three articles which eontniu matter pf especial interest to the people of this section. One iJ" these is a letter from Mr. Hinton James, of Wilmington, who was the first student at the University, vliieh is embodied in an address de livered by President Battle5 at the I'niversity in!880, another is a sketch of the labors of Dr. William Hooper and the third is the first of a series of short biographical sketches of th Confederate Dead of the Uui- trsit v. We recollect Mr. James very well. It was many years ago when he held the posit ion) here of Town Constable, ami had an office in a building which then stood on the site of the cloth ing store now! occupied by Mr. 8. H. Fishblate. He was not of the family of the Editor of .this, paper, although we believe that there was a distant relationship existing. Mr. Battle says in his address: Soon the first student came in -journeving all the way, hun dreds of miles, from the lower Cape War. 'on horseback doubtless, saddle-bags between his legs. We can well imagine that there was 110 severe examination , of him. I do not iind that he was rejected on a single studv. The acting President took down "his pedigree with eager alacrity and as the primeval prede cessor of our worthy Bursar gather ed in the tuition, money, it jingled mournful! v in the bollow treasury. For a short while Hinton James unloosed the entire student force "f the University of Jsorth Carolina. After humorously describing the advantages and disadvantages of lehi the only student, the speaker proceeded.
