They pay f0 per thousand for walnut, (log measure) and $3 per thousand xor ail otuer woous. "Washington Gazette: A most hor rible murder was committed near Creswell, in Washington county, last week. A clock mender from Raleigh, while passing on the New Land road was assaulted mil killed with an axe being struck three times on the head and one arm bro- ken. The body was curried about 100 yards from the public road, put in a hole a foot ileep and cove ret 1 with dirt and brush. Staton to secure kis creditors and sureties for . E. B. Hodges L Co. He conveys all his land without any homestead ex emption. The sympathy of the en tire community goes out to Mr. Hodges in his financial troubles. By steady Industry he accnmnlated an estate worth f20,00 or $50,000, every dime of which represented a drop of sweat. Statesville Landmark: T. A. Hud- ion, Esq., of Miller's township.Alei ander county, made last year, with out gaano, 3 bales of cotton of 5 acres, 60 bushels of wheat and 200 bushels of corn on 8 acres, all with the aid only of ene little mule. The eight pigs of Mr. N. P. Watt, of Chambersburg township, which were spoken of some weeks ago not all of one litter but ranging in aire from 11 J to 20 months have all been slaughtered and weighed net 2,507 lbs, which is an average of 320. The cotton gin of Messrs. Lyerly & Brothers, at Clove land,1' (formerly Third Creek) Rowan county, was destroyed by fire last Thursday with eight bales of cotton and a quantity of cotton In the seed. The loss was be tween $3,000 and $4,000, with no insurance. A couple of weeks ago, or more, Robert, son of Mr. J. O. Moore, of Bethany township, went out hunting, and failing to find any game, concluded, on his re turn trip, not to go home without hearing the report of his gun. He accordingly blazed away at a stump and the gun, one of these single barrel pot metal affairs, with two or three charges in it, burst, and ' blew one of his hands all to pieces. , Winston Sentinel: A reliable col ored man from Belews Creek, this county, was in Winston las week and informed our reporter of the killing of Mr. 4Hriggs ' Cook, by the train on the C. F. & Y. V. R. R. The - accident happened on second Christ mas day near the Forsyth and Guil ford couaty line. He sat down upon the track, and being in a drunken stupor dropped off to sleep, where he lay until about 11 o'clock when the train came along and ran over him. mashing him up considerably and causing death to result in about twenty minutes afterward. Early Monday morning, news reach ed the city that Gen. John E. Poin dexter, of Germanton, had breathed his last on the night previous. This was sad intelligence to many oi our citizens who had long known Gen eral Poind exter. He was never mar ried though he had a number of rel atives, among the number being a niece who 'was recently married to Mr. N. A. Stedman of our city. Geiv era! Poindexter died in the 87th year of his age, He was one of the old landmarks of Stokes county, and was for several years Solicitor of his district. Ho was also elected sev eral times to the State Legislature, hich place he served faithfully and efficiently. Rockingham- Spirit: 2C7 acres, or thereabouts of land, lying on the Carolina Central Railroad, not far from Hamlet, being the , J. J. Newbern Journal: Deputy Sheriff H. A Januan, of Onslow county. railed to see us vesterday and in formed us that Judge Russell was at Jacksonville last Monday and made a sneech on the railroad. IlistalK aroused the people considerably and the prospects for carrying tne siid scrintion .are brighter than ever. We are glad to see the spirit of en terprise alive in this county. A sub scription to this railroad of sixty tkousand dollars will be followed by subscriptions from Wilmington and Newbern and the road will be built. Raleigh Xewsand Observer: The matter of forming a new county with Dunn as the county seat is be ing considerably discussed in Har nett county in the vicinity of Dunn. Thera seems to be no plan mapped out for the formation of the cofnty. Tke main thing, it seems, is to have Dunn for tin county-seat of some county: ami if a new county can't be secured, then the people of Dunn ami vicinity want the county-seat removed from Lillinirton to Dunn for several reasons, among which are. thai Dunn is on the railroad and easilv accessible; that the court house at "Lillington is about "done for." a new one is needed and ought to be built in the most thrifty and enterprising town in the county. I)iscuion of the matter has taken such vtide range that it will prob ably be. for the next Legislature to establish or refuse to establish a new county, which would probably be formed of portions of Harnett, Johnstoii.Cumberlandand Sampson ! ffif o ounties. i ruae asnore, BRCKIPTS FOR WKKK ENDED JAN. 7 Cotton. 1,448; spirits, 787;rosin, G,312; WILMINGTON MARKET.
