The boast of putting giitlle
around the world iu fortv minutes
was accomplished by the London
Pall Mall (tazettelast week. A con-
servsation was carried on between
the Jxridon oflice of the Pall Mall
Gazette and its agentat Vancouver.
The exact distances traversed by
the electric current conveying the
messages are as follows: By wire,
London to Bristol, spur cable, 140
miles; by spur cable to Waterville,
:V?J miles; bv cable from Waterville,
Ireland, to Canso, N. S., 2.750 miles;
from Canso to New York and by the
Canadian Pacilic Railway telegraph
lines to Vancouver, 4,400 miles
making a total of 7,G19 miles. A
conversation was carried on allow
ing for brvaks produced bv a storm
tjiat interrupted the wires, first be
tween Ottawa ami Montreal, and
then West of Winnipeg consec
utively for 'three" hours. The
wire outstripped the sun by eight
hours, the time being 1 o'clock in
the afternoon at Vancouver when it
was y o'clock at night in London.
The prison industries of New York
State under the public-account sys
tem are hardly yet fully established,
and the report of the superinten
dent for the last fiscal year docs not
fairly show what is to be accom
plished. The transition that wasi
going on during a part of the year
involved extra expense and some
delay, and from lack of prompt pro
vision by the Legislature there were
about 800 convicts idle for four
months at Sing Sing. In spite of
that fact the Sing Sing prison pro.
duced a surplus of nearly $19,000 to
offset the deficit of about $70,000 in
the accounts of Auburn and Clinton.
This leaves the net deficit of the de
partment about G0,000. If there is
no new disturbance of the system of
labor there is fair promise that the
prisons may be brought to a self-
sustaining basis again, even under
the State-account system of employ
ment. If this result is achieved it
will be a further evidence ofa the
value of the reform effected some
years ago In the system of manage
ment and supervision. Prior to the
