Work on the Seacoa'st railroad is progressing favorably. There is not a large force of laborers employed, but during the last week they did a considerable amount of grading and made as much advance towards the Sound as could reasonably be ex pected. Our lady friends of the Baptist Chapel, corner Fifth and Wooster streets, will give a festival at the Chapel next Wednesday niirht, the proceeds to lie devoted to tne en largement and improvement of the building. It is a worthy object Goand help them. We regret to learn that Mrs. Julia A., widjow of the late W. L. Uerry, died this morning, after a short but severe illness, ajred oS years. She was the sister of Mr. Win. A. Will son and the mother of Messrs. W. J. and E. O. Toomer. lu all the rela tions of life she was u mot estima ble lady. IVrnonal. 1U. William (iareu, manairer of the "Muggs Landing" theatrical company, is in tli citv making tne necessary preparations for the ap pearance of th troupe here at an e.irlv date. Messrs. U. M. Kohiuson and Ed. Daniel left to-day for Asheville, where they will engage in the mer chandise brokerage business mder the firm name of Hobiuson &J)auicl. They are young men. both of whom have business training, and w re gret much that they have conclud ed to leave Wilmington. 'Pheyhave our heartiest good wishes for their success in the home they have se lected, and e assure the citizens of Asheville that they have gained to worthy young men from this city to their business ami societv. Death of Mr. Alexander. Mr. John Alexander, a vener able resident of this city, died last Saturday night in the 80th year of his age apd was ' buried yesterday from St. John's Church. Mr. Alex ander as a Scotchman by birth and at one time held a commission as paymaster iu the British Navy. He was, we have understood, at the battle of Navariuo in 1S27. He has been very reticent in regard to his Wilmington's Opportunity. The people of )Vilmington are now considering the most important ques tion that has engaged their, atten tion' for many years. To ask the peo ple to vote a'debt upon themselves of a quarter of a million dollars (s of immense importance to every citi zen who has the welfare of his city, his neighbors and himself and fami ly at heart. There are two proposi tions, before the people asking them for this large sum of money a. sub scription of $150,000 to the capital stock of the Cap Fear & Yadkin Valley Railroad, and a like subscrip tion of $100,000 to the Onslow & East Carolina Railroad. The question that suggests itself to every voter is simply this: Willi t pay. to vote these subscriptions and thereby get the road? 1 believe it will pay, and ex pect to vote for both propositions the 1st day of March. The time ha been when Wilmington was the sea port town that supplied the State with all the eollee, sugar, molasses, salt and many other things from South America and Europe, and there were parts of several other States supplied by Wilmington with these articles as well as N5rth Caro lina. The same territory that Wil miiigton once supplied can be sup plied by her again if we succeed in getting" the- Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley Railroivd terminus here. The estern connection at the State line near 31 1. Airy is now assured. I saw the articles of agreement only a fev days. ago. by which the N. & W. li lt, bind themselves to connect with the C. F. &Y. V. R. R. within twelve months from the time the articles of agreement are signed. . lue time the N. & W. R. R. and the C. F. & Y. V. R. R. agree to work together is 30 years. What immense possibil ities 'present themselves to every thinking business man at the very thought orthis western connection! Think of what Baltimore was before the completion of the 13. & O. IC R. and see what she is now; then one or two small vessels loaded for ex port trade during a season and of small consequeifce as compared with her rich neighbors, 'Philadelphia, New York and Boston; in every way they laughed at her efforts when she began to lend her aid to the building oft the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and derided her for even hoping to do a large Western and foreign business when she reached the west bv rail: biitho is it now? Arichandmagniucantcity is the monument that stands at the terminus of the B. & O. U. K. to commemorate the pluck and energy of her business men. If yon desire to be a second Baltimore vote for the subscription to the C. F. & Y. V. R. R. When this western connection is made, we expect to seethe Lynch burg & Durham railroad hurried on to Fayetteville, which means that Lynchburg wants an outlet to the sea tiirougli Wilmington. We also expect to see Raleigh the capital city of ourState, bending her energies to build a railroad from Raleigh to Fayetteville that she may reach the sea through Wilmington and thereby break the shackles that the Associated Railways have had upon the business of Raleigh so long. And last but not least iJliar lotte, the Queen Citv of our State, for the some reasons that actuate Raleigh, will lend her aidin building a road direct to San ford to connect with the C. F. & Y. V. R. R. : Do you lesire to see all these sug guestions accomplished facts?. If so vote for the subscription. Wilmington has been a stranger to the people of her own State long enough. What would Wilmington be to day if she would have controlled the trade of her owtWegitimate ter ritory ever since she lost it? She would now be a city of75,000 inhabi tants, ahd the wealth that this ter ritory has been pouring into other cities vould be yours. If you want to bring back the South American trade, and reclaim youi lost territory, vote for the subscription. We are nearer South America by 500 miles than New York or Isew Orleans either are. We see no reason why we can't draw trade from South Amer ica for the West. The Great Lvy. . 3 The appearance of the celebrated cornetist Jules Levyj and his sup erb company of artisti at the Opera House fast Saturday night afforded our people a good opportunity to listen to an entertainment of the very first order. It is to be much regretted that the attendance was hot larger, although it was about as large as could be expected on a Sat urday night, especially during the Lenten season. The Compaq - was composed of three i genuine and cultivated artists, without an excep tion. Mr. F. V. Downey, the pianist although quite young and '"unknown to fame" showed himself a perfect master of the instrument. His exe cution was wonderful. Missj Tor bett had been here before sc that we knew what charming . tones .we might expect to hear, from the violin under her magie skill. The vocalists were superb, and the readings were good. Mr. Levy showed what were the possibilities of the cornet, and established the facttoa Wilmington audience that on that instrument he is far superior to any competitors We hope that the next time he visits our city he will appear as a strictly sober man.
