It is under stood that Mr. Maine, while he does not mean to be put into the Presi dential race, does intend to return without delay to political life. Iti not thought by any of his friends that he desires to return to the House of Representatives; if he did. no doubt Mr. Milliken. one of his most devoted followers, would triad 1 tf,v UP 1,1 his favor, nut it is bnlinved that Mr. Maine prefers the Senate, and that is not a pleasant prospect for Mr. Frye, whose 'term expires with this Congress, and who would like another term, or for Mr. Ueed, who would like to be Mr. L'rye's aa . c a. successor. Mr inaine s senatorial aspirations wotihl, iu this view, cast a certain gloom over Maine politics next fall and winter, unless, indeed. Senator Hale, as has been suggest ed. should resign and let Mr. Maine be appointed to fill his term, which runs to liKJ. Those who suggest this sav that Mr. Hale was introdu CHtl into political life by Mr. Maine and that it was through Mr. Maine's long continued, kind and almost fatherly fostering care while he was SfSeaker that Mr. Hale, without con spicuous ability of any kind, obtain ed a political and social prominence which (lnallv landed him in the Sen ate. The New York correspondent of the Baltimore Sun says: "Whether Mr. Blaine's letter of withdrawal be sincere or insincere, it has had the etTeet of starting up a whole tlock of Presidential booms in New York State. No less than six distinguish ed sons of New York have the honor of being zealously advocated by their admirers, each as being the be.t fitted to lead the Republican party to a national victory next fall. The names of the six are Chauncey M. Depew, William M. Kvarts, War ner Miller. Frank Hiscock, Ex-Governor A.B.Cornell and Roscoe Conk ling, .lust at present the Pepew boom is soaring the highest, and if any Republican can carry NewYork State against Cleveland this year Mr. Depew is the man, despite his connection with that great corpor ation, the New York Central Rail road. Six months ago Mr. Depew positively declared that he would not accept the nomination for the Presidency if it were tendered him. Now he simply tells the newspaper interviewers that he is not a candi date ami does not want the nomina tion. The booms of Evarts, Hiscock, Miller, Cornell and Conkling are very diminutive eompared with that of Depew. Each of the smaller booms ikent goingin the hope that Presidential lightning may strike a "compromise" candidate. Roscoe Conkling, however, it is but just to remark, lias no apparent interest in or sympathy for his particular boom. That is being nursed by some of the old stalwart leaders entirely inde pendent tf Mr. Conkling's expressed wishes structed nenwiner, and was aston ished the following Sunday to see him come into church wearing it as a cravat. Two young writers were talking of their hopes, their ambitions. "If I have not made a reputation by the time Fin thirtv I shall blow my brains out,1 asserted one. "My dear boy." replied the other, "you are as good as dead.1' The most novel complaint of im pure milk reported is that of a Lon don bov, boarded out under the poor-law regulation, who reported that themilk iriven him out of town, instead of being taken out of clean' tins, had been squeezed out of a nasty cow, and he ''seed 'em a-doing it." Prof. Proctor, speaking of the pos sibility of human beings flying, says: "The greatest difficulty which man has first to oercome is that of main taining his balance." Doesn't the professor know that the difficulty of maintaining his balance lias caused more than one man to fly to Can ada? Go forth in haste! No time to waste!
