Tin report of the commission ap
iiniiitt'tl in Enclaiitl to Mft the results
of tin EnlMi ol)serv;itions of the
transit of Venus in 1S'2 has recently
hr-en matle. It gives the solar par
allax as $.k2 If. then, we take 7,
Oltl inile us the diameter of the
e.trth, wh" gft ninety-two million
three hundred ami eighty-nine thou
sand five hundred and thirty-one
mil s and a quarter for the distance
to the sun. This sounds very accu
rate, but it must be remembered
that the parallax nhove given issub-r
ject to limits of error which made
the calculation of di.-tance uncer
tain to the extent of about a quar
ter of a million miles; that is to say,
the sun's distance may be C-OOO
miles greater or less than the fig
ures given above. Notwithstand
ing tl;e elaborate preparations made
for the observation of the transit of
182. and tin general success of the
observers, it appears that the results
m a. jl 1
are no more sariidaciory man mose
obtainl from the transit of 1874.. ,
The parallax is not very different,
and thi limit; of error are just us
extenive.
A movement is on foot among the
officers of the United States army
who are stationed in Ne York to
estanli.!! a national museum 01 war
relics ami records. The collection
now in tin museum on uovernor s
Island will eoiir-titute the nueleus of
tin proposed institution, and assur
ances of valuable contributions have
been received from a bund red or more
mVn on the active and retired list Of
the United States army. The idea
is to give this museum the broadest
national character. Contributions
are to be solicited not only from
men who served in the Union army.
but xdso from the men who served
in the Confederate army. The ex
traordinarv success of the Metro
politan Museum of Art in enlisting
the interest of wealthy and liberal
minded citizens has given rise to
this movement, and the projectors
rely on the patriotism of Americans
generally to aid them in making the
new institution a success. An effort
is likely to be made to get the Gen
eral Government to turnoverto the
proposed museum the larire lot of
relics ami gifts left bv Gen. Grant,
and it is not unlikely that the organ
izer., of the new movement may lie
abl to co operate ith the Grant
Monument Association soas to make
the mu.eiim and the monument one
and the same thing.
An Imperative Necessity.

The long di.cussitm among the
Republican member of the New
Jerev Legiature as to what form
of restrictive temperance letrisla
tion they ought to adopt has result-
a .
eii in agreement upon .a measure
which combines moderately high
license with local option. This
measure, as adopted in joint Repub
lican caucus and presented to the
Legi.-lature, put the minimum li
cense fee for all cities and towns
having a population exceeding 10.-
000, at &2'i0: for all those having a
population over 3.000 anil less than
10,000. at $150. and all under 3.000, at
$loV. One-tenth of the legal voters
of anv count v can. bv netitinn in
la day fixed for holding an election
to decide by popular vote . whethet
or not the sale of liquor shall be
permitted within the county. This
combination of license aud local
option is similar to that which is in
practice in Ohio. Missouri, Michigau
and Illinois, where its success has
been very marked. The New Jer
sey fees are lower than those of any
of the Western States named save
Ohio. In the latter State there is
no license, but a tax law fixing a un
iform tax of $200 upon full liquor sa
loons, and $100 upon beer saloon-.
Its success, working together with
a local option clause, lias been most
satisfactory. Compared with the
present rates in New Jersey, those
of the proposed bill are a great ad
vance, and there is little doubt that
if the measure becomes a law its li
cense fees will reduce materially the
numler of saloons in the cities.
while its local option clause will
permit any rural county which
cnooses, to uamsu me iramc com
pletely from its limits.

If we know all the methods of ap
proach adopted by an enemy we are
better enabled to ward off the dan
ger and postpone the moment when
surrender becomes inevitable. In
many instances the inherent strength
of the body suffices to enable it to
oppose the tendency toward death.
Many, however, have lost these for
ces to such an extent that there is
little or no help. In other cases a
little aid to the weakened Lungs
will make all the difference between
sudden death and many years of
useful life. Upon tho first symp
toms of a Cough, Cold or any trouble
of the Throat or Lungs, give that
old and well-known remedy Bosch
ee's German Syrup, a careful trial.
It will prove what thousands say of
it to be, the "benefactor of any
