It has now been discovered that in all probability the prehistoric man in this country ate pork, and very likely had an occasional attack of trichinosis. In the sedimentary rock of the John Day River canyon, in Southern Oregon, was recently discovered eighty-live feet below the surface a petrified hog's head of full size and perfect shape. It has been supposed that swine were introduc ed into this country at a compara tively recent date, but now it mav be believed that American pork chops and sausage are really as ven" erable as they often taste. Secretary Hayard is perfectly sat- i-iel with the lishieries treaty, and. in an interview with the New York Herald's Washington correspondent said: '-The United States have se cured practically everything we have been contending for. I don't hesitate to say that if Canuda had conceded to American fishermen in ls-'i one-fouHh of the rights that are secured for them by this treaty there would have been no trouble at all. We would not have had a single complaint, because no griev ance would have been felt. Every difficult v that the American fisher men have had to contend with has been removed bv this treaty." It is owing to the influence of Mr. Blaine's wife that he has refused to become a candidate for President this year, according to the Boston (J lobe. A ladv of New York city' who knows Mrs. Hlaiue. says she is certain of the truth of the statement She describes Mrs. Blaine as a lady of broad mind ami marked traits, prom inent among which is her strong will. Mrs. Blaine has seen a great tleal of the turmoil of politics during her husband's political career of twenty years, and is anxious to en joy-the peace of domestic life. She is well versed in public affairs and in the ways of Republican politi cians, csne Knows ttie luirassnients of power. She has a controlling in fluence with her husband and over his course in life, and even the White House itself looks to her like an abode of vanitv and vexation of spirit. The executive committee of the National Republican League held a. meeting in New York recently to ar range for a vigorous campaign this fall. The members claim to be milch pleased at the outlook and say that the Republican party has made great gains in many or the routhern States. Their chief work was to ar range a literary bureau for the cam paign. It is said that two points have been agreed upon for campaign documents. One is that the Hon. Joseph Chamberlain, now in this country as a member of the fisheries commission, inspired the President's message on the subject of the tariff. The other is that if Congress fails to reduce the tariff, the Democrats are to be charged with being afraid to support the policy of the President. On the other hand if a tariff reduc. tion bill is passed, the protected in dustries will be asked to shut down for several months before the elec tion, so as to give color to the claim that important industries are de pressed on account of Democratic policy. - Owing to the long term nil? in Louisiana the Legislature of that State will elect two United States States Senators in May nextone to ,. ..... Some of these cures are really wonderful. If you suffer from scrofula, bo sure to try Hood's SarsapariQa, "Every spring my wife and children have been troubled with scrofula, sores breaking out on them In various places. My little boy, three years old, has been a terrible sufferer. Last springhe was one mass of sores from head to feet. I was advised to use Hood's Sarsapa rilla, and we have all taken it.
