Danville Register: Colonel John
R. Winston, well-known In this city,
died of consumption at his home in
Caswell countv, N. C, last Wednes
day, and wo buried Thursday ..at
the Red House church. Colonel
Winston vrao a Confederate soldier
noted for daring and bravery. He
was a prisoner 00 Johnston's Island,
and in the dead of winter he
made his escape by scaling the pris
on wr.Hs and then, though bare foot
and thinlv clad, he walked miles on
f!ie ice an'd finally reached Canada
in safetv. Colonel Winston was a
very prominent granger, and was
idx a leader iu the greenback party
which nt one time had a stronir fol
io ing in North Carolina. He will
be greatly misled by a large family
connection and many menus.

An old lady by the name of Mrs.
Lucy 1 Tracy, a dressmaker, well
known to many of our readers, was
found dead this morning in her
room, in the building S. E. corner of
Market and Front Mreets. When
discovered the body was lying on
the Iloor. under a table, and she had
evidently been dead forsome hours.
Coroner Miller was notilied and Dr.
Potter examined the body but an
