About fifty years ago a pilot resid ing at Smfthville by the name of ElijahTodd was alleged to have found a large quantity of money buried.Jon Zeke's Island, the piece of barren close of the seventeenth century that a brig from Madagascar, bound from England, which had been blown out of her course, anchored off Sullivan's Island, at the Charles ton bar, and furnished Thomas Smith, a prominent colonist, with a bag of rciugh rice, accompanied by a description of its great nutritions qualities, its method of cultivation and its almost incredible increase. It has now become not only a staple article of food in the South but' is grown largely for export. The South is the natural-home of rice, not withsanding the fact that it is not indigenous to the soil, as that raised in the Southern States is far superior to the article brought here from the Orient. While absent he took advan tage of the opportunity and paid a visi to Washington! City, in the in terest of an appropriation by the Government for the construction of a macadamized roadway fromFourth street to the National Cemetery, just East of the city limits. A bill to. construct this road has been introduced by Hon. C. W. Mc Clammy and has been referred to the Committee on War Claims. Maj. McClammy and Mrj Fishblate went before this committee and stated the case to them and the necessity which exists for this road, j and the result is that the committee came to the unanimous conclusion to report the bill favorably to the House, recom mending that the sum of $10,000 be appropriated for the construction of this road.
