astonishingly short period it per

According to the enthusiastic talk
of the jockeys now assembled at the
rack of the Brooklyn Jockey Club,
he personal fame of the President
ot the Limed states is to be over
shadowed this season bv the achieve
uient of an equine namesake. The
much-talked-of running horse Grov
er Cleveland has been brought to
the Brooklyn track from California
for the purpose of winning the Sub
urban in June. "Snapper" Garri
son believes that the horse Grover is
able to beat anything on the turf,

Garrison. The California runner, it
is said, has a record of 1.43, made in

will be held in Washington City on
the 22i inst. The purpose is to take
steps to form a National Bar Asso
ciation. This convention was sug
gested at the auuual meeting of the
Bar Association of the- District of
Columbia a year ago. The associaj
tion at that time instructed its board
of directors "to coKiinuuicate with
the local Bar associations through
out the countrv and also with the
American Bar Association, with tbe
yiew of forming a national legal
body, to be composed of delegates
from the various associations, and
to meet in annual convention, such
body to have for its object the ad
vancement of the science of law in
this country. In December last the
boartl of directors had received so
many, favorable responses to the cir
culars sent out that the 22d of Max-

convention.

A Revolution in Waalilng Processes.
"The scrubbing boartl will soon
be a relic of the barbarous ages,"
enthusiastically remarked an up
town New York grocer.
SHowso?'1 i
"A ne process has been discov
ered bv a wealthy Pittsburg inven
tor who tloes not care to make
inonevout of his wits, and therefore
gives Ids information to the public
free. Here it is: He says that if
anv one who has a moderate sized
washing say for a family of four or
five persons will put the clothes to
soak over night as usual, and add to
the water a half teactipful of pt re
benzine, and then, when they fre
pnt on to boil, add another half tea-
cjpfnl f benzine to the water in
the boiler, the dirt can be removed
from them with very little rubbing;
he labor ot the laundress will be
reduced more than one half, and
the clothes will be as white as they
can be made. Some may object to
he smell of tint benzine, but he says
thatall disappears by evaporation
in the process of boiling. The ex
periment is certainly worth trying.
Heuzine sells fora few cents a quart,
and it is said a pint of the fiuid will
do for two large washings. Mailand
