On the contrary, the report of the registrar of vital sta tistics for the year 1880, just pub litihetl, shows a remarkable and alarming increase of the tendency since 1870. In that year and in 1871 the number of divorces decreed w as only 140; in 1886 it was 385, and since 1880 it has only once fallen as low as 273. The average number for the seven years beginning with 1870 was 2t2t while for the seven years begin ning with 18S0 it was318,an increase of 50 per cent., although the popu lation of-the State was less than 10 per cent. larger in the second period than in the first. During 1886 there were ten divorcea to every eighty three marriages a proportion sel tlom reached in any State, and far too large to he viewed without ap prehension. . The report that the Czar is to be crowned Emperor of Central Asia at Samarcand by way of offsetting Queen Victoria's Indian title is not unlikely, nor would the coronation be merely the piece of flummery that it at first appears. It is re Iorted that it gratifies the Queen to be called Kaisar-i-Hind, and to be able to sign herself "ViQ&oria R. I.," though it is doubtful whether the assumption has any more solid ad-' vantages. .But there was no actual investiture iu India, while a corona tion at Samarcand, with the pomp that Russia would give to it, would wifhout doubt be a clever uolitical stroke. It would create a deep im pression of the Russian power among the populations already subject to Russia, nnd among the populations of the debatable land whom it is still more desirable to impress. A ruler who despises ceremony and display foregoes the readiest method of gaining control over people in the stage of development of those Asiat ics for the control of whom Russia and England are now striving. aa Our .C net I date for PreHldent. He will be nominated by the con vention and will be elected by the people, because he will come the nearest to filling their ideal of a Chief Magistrate. Jotibert. The Trausvaal, since the treaty of 1881, enjoys absolute self-government, as far as regards in ternal affairs, while the control and management of external affairs are reserved to the Queen of England as suzzerain. At present; it has an es timated area of 112,000; square miles and a white population of 60,u00, of whom OOO are of Dutch ancestry. The native population- is estimated at 300,000. One of the best tributes" to the bravery of the Confederate soldiers comes from the members of the Honorable Artillery Company of London, while guests of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Boston. The battlefield, of Get tysburg was one of the luost.inter- esting points which the visitors have seen, aud the different-posi tions were readilv understood, with the exception of Pickett's famous charge of Confederate troops upon the centre of the Union line on the 3d day of July, 1863. The English officers, several of whom had seen aetiveervice, could not believe un til convinced by'absolqte p"roof, that a botlyof infantry couUl, ijti the face of a terrible lire of arilley and in fantry, penetrate the lne or an ene my, and supposed that the attack was made by cavalry. In the realm of disease "the facts of in"--heritance are most numerous and are daily accumulating. Here,' alas, they become ter rible, fateful and overwhelming! No fact of ' nature is more pregnant with awful mean- . lng than the fact of the Inheritance ' of ; disease. It meets the physlbian on hi$ daily -' rounds, paralyzing his art and 'filling him, with dismay. The legend of the ancient Greeks pictures the Furies . as pursuing - j families from generation , to , generation,- .; rendering them desolate. Tho Furies still . ply their work of terror and death, but they . are not now clothed in Oie garb of supersti tion, but appear in the more intelligible but no less awful form of hereditary disease. Modern science, which has Illuminated so many dark corners of nature, has shed a new light on the ominous words of the Scriptures, "The sins of the fathers shall be visited upon the children unto the third and fourth generation." Instances ot hereditary ' disease abound. Fifty per cent, of cases of consumption, that fearful destroyer of f ami- -lies, of cancer and scrofula, run in families through inheritance. Insanity is hereditary -in a marked degree, but, .fortunately, like many other hereditary diseases, tends to wear itself out, the stock becoming extinct. A distinguished scientist truly says No organ or texture of the body is exempt from -the chance of being the subject of hereditary ; disease." Probably more chronic .'diseases, - which permanently modify the structure and functions of the body, are more or less liable to be Inherited. The important and far-reaching practical deductions from such facts affecting so powerfully the happiness ' of individuals and families and the collective welfare of the nation-aro obvious to reflec-' ting minds, and the best means for prevent- ' lng or curing these diseases is a subject of ' Intense Interest to all.' Fortunately nature has provided a remedy, which experience has attested as infallible, and the remedy Is the world-famous Swift's Specific, " a puro vegetable compound nature's antidote for all blood poisons. To the afflicted it is a blessing of inestimable value. "An interest- ing treatise on " Blood and Skin Diseases" - will be mailed free by addressing Tns Swift Specific Co., Drawer 8, Atlanta.
