On the Qaeen Yesterday.
The excursionists, on the steamer
Queen of St. John's returned to the
city about 7 o'clock. The run was
a delightful one and was enlivened
with sweet streams of music by the
Cornet Concert Club. During the
trip ameetiug was called of those
on board for the purpose of express
! ing the sentiment of the excursion
ists.
Mr. H. C. McQueen, President of
the Produce Exchange, called the
meetiug to order referring in com.
plimentary terms to the courteous
attentions received, and on" his
motion Col. F. Kerchner, Presi
dent of the Chamber of Commerce,
was called on to preside. "
On taking the chair Col. Kerchner
said that they were called together
to take some action expressive of
their appreciation of the courtesy,
and declared the meeting ready for
business.-
$ On motion of Mr. J. C. Stevenson
a committee of three was appointed
to prepare suitable resolutions, the
chair appointing Messrs. J. C Ste
venson, C. P. Mebane and Samuel
Bear, Jr.
During their absence, Maj. T. D.
Love and Col. Kerchner entertained
the meeting with some remarks in
appreciation of their enjoyment and
with expressions of their best wishes
for the success of the boat.
The committee, through Mr. J. C
Stevenson, submitted the following
resolutions:
Whkreas, Through the eonrtesy
of Captr R. P. Paddison and W. H.
Christopher, Esq., purser of the
steamer Queen of St. John's, the
members of the Chamber of Com
merce and Produce Exchange and
their guests were invited to enjoy
the hospitalities of these clever
gentlemen on an excursion down
the river; therefore.
Resolved. That we appreciate
fully the courtesy of these officers,
and very sincerely recognize the
advent of this beautiful and com
modious steamer as another of the
many evidences" of the prosperity
and material advancement of our
city.
Resolved, That . on behalf of the
community we hail with delight the
evidence of the attractions of our
city and coast, which make it nec
essary to have such accommoda
tions for our growing summer trade.
Ilexolved, That this Chamber and
Board recommend that the enter
prise and liberality shown by our
hosts in bringing this magnificent
steamer tofour. waters be apprecia
ted by our community ia the same
spirit which actuates them.
Resolved, That the thanks of
every one are due and are hereby
tendered" to all concerned, in this
truly enjoyable excursion.
Resolved. That the thanks of these
onests. narticularly on this occa
sion. and the community generally,
nr thie and are hereby tendered to
thA Wilmington Cornet Concert
Club, for their uniform cheerfulness
in oontributiner their valuable part
towards making pleasant all occa
sions or general interest m um
munity.
Mr. A. GK Ricaud seconded the
resolutions and spoke at some length
referring very handsomely to the
auspicious.advent of the Queen in
the Cape Fear aud also to the many
facilities now enjoyed here for Sum
mer recreation, without tne neces
sity of going abroad to seek it. He
also alluded to the fleet of elegant
boats already in the excursion and
passenger busiuess on the lower
Cape Fear; wishing a continued and
abundant success forall.
At the conclusion of Mr. Ricaud's
beautiful little address the' Cornet
Band rendered a beautiful selection
and then Messrs. Samuel Bear, Jr.
and B. G. Worth, in response to
calls, addressed the meeting briefly.
The resolutions were then unani
mously adopted and the meeting ad
journed.
For Fishing or Sailing. "
The Tatpon, the new steam yacht
at the Hummocks, is about the most
comfortably arranged craft of her
size we have ever seen. She has all
of the facilities required for fishing
and sailing parties and many of the
conveniences found on .larger boats.
That clever gentleman, Capt. Leta
Potter, is in command and is always
ready to take out fishing or sailing
parties,.

It was further suggested that Mr

A Horrible and Fatal Accident. -
Capt. William M. Swann, a highly
esteemed citizen Of this place, met
with a sadden and shocking death
this morning. It ' was "about' 7:30
o'clock, aud Capt. Swann, who. was
in the employ of Mr. C. B. Mallette,
a in tuber shipping merchant, was at
the freight depot of the W. C. & A.
R. R. to attend" to the reception and
shipping of a lot of lumber from
Mavsville, S. C, then on the cars
and destined to be stowed on board
the Schr. W. H. Hopkins, lying at
the railroad wnarr, -and receiving
cargo for Philadelphia. CaptS wann
was standing neaV the track, on the
inner side of a curve, as the train
was beinsr moved down. A flat car
loaded with scantling, 8x8 inches,
had one piece longer than the
rest, and this projecting in
front was driven against the
car ahead or it as ttie car came
around the curve and in this way
the pressure forced out one of the
stancheons and before Capt. Swann
could dream of danger he was crush
ed to the earth with nearly all of
the entire carload on him: His poor
body was badly broken and there
is no doubt death was instanta
neous. The spirit had lied before
those who reached the spot could
relieve his body of the fatal pressure
upon it.
It was deemed necessary to hold
an inquest over the body and acting
Coroner Jacobs empaneled a jury,
who returned a" verdict in accord
ance with 'the facts as we have
stated them.
CaptI Swann was a native of Wil
mington ' and a descendant of one
of the inost ancient and honorable
of thes Cape Fear families. He en
tered early into r the ? Confederate
Army and served throughout the
entire war, during the latter part as
the enrolling officer of this district.
He was 53 years of age.He was a man
of a modest, retiring disposition and
of sterling integrity. Peace to his
ashes! -' ' " ' ''"

Hammock or Hammock Again.
Maj. Daves is . still .hammering
away at the word "iiaminooK" or

prove anything yet,: beyond the fact
that his authority for the use of the
word "hammock" is derived from
Worcester's Dictionary of the 1848
edition. The Major speaks rather
indefinitely of an Indian llerivation.
We have always thought, that it was
of Spanish origin. JVe wish that
