" Monday afternoon the Chief and Assistant Chief of the Fire Depart ment, with the officers of the vari ous white fire companies and the Germania Cornet Band, will visit Camp Pender. The match game of baseball play ed yesterday at the SeasideGrounds between the Wilmington amateurs and the Oxford Club, was won by the latter, with a score of thirteen to four. There was a large crowd on the grounds. For the benefit of the military and other visitors tickets for a trip from Wrightsville to Carolina Beach have been, placed on sale at the Wrights ville station of the Seacoast Rail road. The fare for the round trip is only seventy-five cents. Messrs. Cronly & Morris, auction eers, will sell at public auction tat the Court House door, on Monday next, ten unimproved lots on Chest nut,,between Tenth and Eleventh streets; a house and lot on Second street, between "Ann and Nun, and the brick store No. 12, on Market street, between Front and Water. Charlotte Democrats We com mend to the kind consideration of our Wilmington menus the Hor net's Nest Riflemen of this city, who are In camp at Wriglrfsville Sound. The boys of that company are all gentlemen, officers and privates, be longing to the best families of Char lotte, and we think they know how to behave themselves as gentlemen. Both Reocaed. We hear of two cases yesterday of narrow escapes while bathing in the surf. One was that of a venture some youth who wanted the whole ocean for a "bath tub and the other that of a party who was takln with cramps while too far out. Botli were fortunately rescued. Mr. J. G. L. Gieschen, Secretary and Treasurer of the Germania Cor net Band, received this morning by express the uniform for their drum major, Mr. J. H. Dingelhoef. It is of black cloth.- The pants has a gold stripe running down the leg. the coat is handsomelv trimmed with gold lace and the cap is of bear kin, with a red and white plume. The staff is of Wack mahogany with a silver top. Rock Crystal Spectacles and Eyeglass es Advice to old and young: in se ecting spectacles you should be cau ious not to r take more magnifying vower than has been lost to the eve as in the same proportion that you pass that 'point of increase, will cause you further injury to the eye. Using glasses of stronger power than is ner cessary is the daily cause of prema ture old aoe to thesiahu ioucan get the best at Heinsberger's. t: i The camp rasounded last evening with vocal music- There are some splendid voices among the soldier j boys and the tedium of camp life is often relieved in this way, just as it was in the old days in '61 and '62. At Fifth Street M. E. Church to morrow morning and night. Rev. D. H" Tuttle's subject will be "Bible chains and the lessons they teach us." Seats free and the public cordially invited, j V Personal. , - ? Mr. S. F. Gardner, of Durham, is in the city and paid us a pleasent visit yesterday. f . M r. Jas. I. Mc Ree, of the Raleigh News and Observer is in the city, accompanied by his wife, on a visit to Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Williams. Chief Oldenbuttle and Assistant M. They will be in full uniform and accompanied by Germania Band. City Court. - Mayor Fowler disposed of the fol io wing cases this morning. Wm. Moore, disorderly conduct, $10 or 20 days. J. W. Mclntire, larceny, case on tinued. W. C. Collision, disorderly con duct, $20 or 30 days. Surf Bathing. Surf bathing is at all times a dan gerous amusement for some people. We mean those who are rash and ventnresome and who cannot get any fun out of the thing without venturing beyond the danger line. Those who are satisfied with rolling and tumbling in the surf can gen erally bathe there with as much se curity as in a placid uiill-porrd. To them the danger is minimized. Old Vets to Visit. A" meeting of veteran soldiers was held at the City Hall last night to discuss the propriety of attending the encampment of the State Guard at Wrightsville in a body. Major T. D. Love presided, with Mr. Chas, H. King secretary. On motion of Col. E. D. Hall, a committee was appointed to see if satisfactory ar rangements can be made for the proposed visit, and if so, to call meeting of all old soldiers at the City Court room next Mondaynight at 8 o'clock. It was further resolved to invite all ex-Federal soldiers to unite with ex-Confederates in ten deriug their respects to the State Guard. The Bohemian Girl. Thelargest audience of the season was present last night at the Opera House to hear the Crescent Opera Company in the Bohemian Girl The opera was faithfully rendered but candor compels us to say that tbe troupe did .- not appear to as much advantage in this as in the Mascotte and the Chimes of Nor many. Miss Johnson, however. must be excepted from this criti cism. she was simply supero in many places and her rendition of that charming .old ballad, "I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls" called forth a vociferous encore. Still, we would muchrather see her as the Mascotte. Tne isonemian fchrl will oe pre sented again to-ntcht, and seats may be secured at Heinsberger's. The Eclipse To-Morrow Night. The July moon, which fills at 31 minutes past 12 o'clock to-night, will be eclipsed to-morrow night. It will enter the shadow a little be fore 11 o'clock at night, and will leave it shortly after 2:35 o'clock on the morning of the 23d. The total eclipse will take place about mid night. The condition's of the eclipse are all that can be desired by obser" vers in this longitude. Totality commences when tne moon is al most on the meridian, and contin ues 1 hour and 40 minutes, and the time from the moon's entrance into the earth's shadow until she leaves it is 3 hours and 40 minutes. The eclipse will, be visible generally throughout North and South Amer ica and portions of Europe, AfrUa and the Pacific Ocean. .It is a repe tition of the eclipse of July 12, 1870- V Decoration. .Flag Bunting. The threatening weather did not prevent a large attendance yester day of ladies as well as gentlemen at the dress parade at the Encamp ment in the afternoon. It was the most imposing "parade the troops have yet given to the public. The ranks were all full and everybody seemed to be on duty. A large number of leaves were granted and last night a great many of the troops were in the city. There was a larger number at the Opera House than we have yet seen there at any one performance and many went down on; the moonlight excursion last evening. , - The following were the camp offi cers for toay: Field Offieer Maj.
